If you want to know what’s the chance of getting pregnant if you had unprotected sex you have come to the right place.
Like others, you will hear many rumors about where and when you could get pregnant. For some women, the thought of getting pregnant is met with great joy and anticipation, while for others it’s a cause of worry.
This is why most women in the reproductive age or the ones who are trying desperately to conceive will have many questions or doubts about their chances of conceiving.
We will look further at this below to help you understand more about unprotected sex and pregnancy.
What’s the Chance of Getting Pregnant If You Had Unprotected Sex
There is a good chance that you could get pregnant nearly any time that you engage in sexual intercourse without using an effective birth control. This scenario is familiar to most women.
Pregnancy usually occurs around the ovulation period, the time when your ovary releases egg in the fallopian tube. If you are having regular periods, ovulation will take place midway between your menstrual periods.
Ovulation usually happens midway between the first-day of 2 consecutive periods, but this can vary from the eight day to the twentieth day of a 28-day cycle.
Researchers calculate the average risk at varying times in a monthly cycle of a woman, but you should know that your risk can be lower or higher.
You cannot know the definite time of your ovulation, which is why the researchers use the monthly cycle of a woman when calculating the average risk for pregnancy.
Figuring Out the Chances of Getting Pregnant If You Had Unprotected Sex
You are more likely to conceive if you have unprotected sex during the middle 2 weeks of your cycle. The time varies, but many women ovulate about day 14.
You will have the highest risk of pregnancy by having unprotected sex one or two days before your ovulation starts; when the ovary releases the egg.
This is a 30% chance. The risk of having unprotected sex and getting pregnant three days prior to ovulation is 15%. You will have a 12% chance on the ovulation day. [1]

In the real world, large studies show that women who engage in unprotected sex during mid-cycle have a much lower chance of getting pregnant as the risk is around 5.8%.
This is because you will have a much lower risk of getting pregnant if you engage in any sexual relations on the ovulation day and any day besides the three days prior to.
Not Getting Pregnant After Having Unprotected Sex for Months
There are times when having unprotected sex is not enough for you to get pregnant. You could be doing this for months with no luck.
Thankfully, there are certain things that you could do to increase your chances if it’s taking longer than expected for you to conceive.
This includes doing thinks like monitoring your ovulation, using an ovulation predictor kit, charting your basal body temperature, as well as checking and observing your cervical mucus.
When you have an idea of your ovulating time, you can start to time your sexual activities around that period. If you are using this method, you must ensure that you are having sex 2 days before your ovulation day or every other day during the week of your expected ovulation. This will boost your chances of conceiving.
If it’s a case where you have been engaging in unprotected sexual activities for more than six months without success, you could visit your doctor or ob/gyn to know about the alternative treatments that you could use for fertility problems. There are several solutions available and they are very effective.
How to Know When You Get Pregnant
The most common sign of pregnancy after unprotected sex is missed period. However, this missed or late period is not a sure sign as there are many other things that can cause it besides pregnancy.
This includes using birth control that contains hormones, stress, sickness, improper eating habits, or too much exercise.

Hi there. I has my period from April 30-May 6. On May 22, I had sex with my husband, which resulted with the condom breaking. On May 24, 25, and June 2, my husband used the “pull out” method. Is it possible I got pregnant?
Note: my periods have been almost twice a month for six days since my last pregnancy 6 months ago. My cycles are usually irregular and last between five to seven days.
There is a chance but based on what you shared, you have a history of having an irregular cycle. In most cases, women with this issue tend to have a harder time becoming pregnant. The only way to know for sure is to be tested by your doctor. Try not to worry to much until then.
hi I was on the pill for the last 5 years I went very ill last month and doctors asked me to stop the pill half way. I had light spotting on the 3rd of may and then had a normal period on the 25th of may but it was 9 days long. I had unprotected sex on the 4th of June. can i get pregnant and if I take the emergency pill before 24 hours will it work as the ovulation app said that my last day of ovulation will be tomorrow
Many women experience a disruption when going off the pill. I wouldn’t worry too much about the 9 day cycle. As for the chance of pregnancy, it is possible. I would wait a little longer then go in to the doctor to be tested. Since you were just on birth control, over the counter tests may give you a false positive or false negative reading.
My cycle is 24 days I had my period on 16/05/2016 and I had unprotected sex on 24th and 25th of May consecutively. Could I be pregnant?
You were fertile from May 24 to May 28, 2016 so it’s possible that you conceived.
Have you tested because I tend to think you are 14 dpo.
Hi, I had my period on May 2, I had unprotected sex on May 26. And I’m expecting my period on June 2. Do you think I’ll get pregnant after having that unprotected sex?
It is aways possible to get pregnant if you have unprotected sex. It’s best to wait and see if you’ll miss that period.
Hi, I tried to reply to your comment on my post. My period started the next day (after having unprotected sex the previous day). When would be a good time to take a pregnancy test just to be sure?
Hi Lousie, the more sensitive your pregnancy test the earlier it will detect your pregnancy. Else you should take pregnancy test 10 days after your missed period date.
I had unprotected sex on 30 april but my periods came on 2 may. I took unwanted 72 on the same day and my periods lasted for 8-9 days. My periods have not come yet, I did a pregnency test on 31 may and 2nd june both came negative. Can i be pregnent?
Hi Anna, since you had taken the medicine you have less chances of being pregnant, just to be sure take pregnancy test 10 days after your missed period date. If you are still negative and have not got periods yet consult a doctor
Hi, I have a 24-25 day cycle, and had unpotected sex at day 18, is there a chance I might be pregnant?
Hello. The chances of getting pregnant on day 18 of a 24-25 days cycle would be low.
Hello. Me and my husband had unprotected intercourse before my ovulation and during it but today again I am on periods and I am surprised. Why didn’t I get pregnant? I am worried. My last periods were on 5 May and now it’s on June 2. And I have 28-day cycle.
I have unprotected sex a day before my period started. Could I be pregnant?
It is unlikely for you to get pregnant just before a cycle but it’s not impossible. If you have a regular 28-days cycle, you would not be fertile before your next menstrual period begins.
My period started the next day and it is a normal period. I’m not entirely sure about my cycle… when would be a good time to take a pregnancy test just to be sure?
You can get the most accurate result if you wait at least one week after missing your period. In addition, the result might be even more accurate if the test is done first in the morning as the urine is far more concentrated at this time.
I had sex on May 28 around 3 ish in the morning and it was two days before I was ovulation according to my period tracker app, but he didn’t finish inside. He pulled out way before he had too. He would pull out and go into the bathroom for a couple minutes and finish. I’m freaking out that I could be pregnant. Please reply. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety so it’s just making it worse for me. I’ve been taking pills and smoking to calm myself down. What do I do.
Hello Avila, Please relax and do not take stress. It would make it hard for you to diagnos your real symptoms. You should take a pregnancy test to be sure.
Hello. My period start on May 16to 21.then we had unprotected sex on May 23,26,28,30 (8th,11th,13th,15th) My cycles is about 28 to 30 days. Is there any chance of getting pregnant? Thank u.
Hi Jenny, yes there are chances of getting pregnant when you have sex on or near your ovulation days. Based upon your data 26 to 30 were your ovulation days So all the best!
Thank you. On June 8 and 9 ( 24th, 25thday) I had brownish, dry discharge. Is it a sign of implantation bleeding? We’re trying to conceive so I’m very confused right now. Thank you so much.

Hi, If you had unprotected sex around the ovulation time i.e., your fertile window, there is a possibility of you getting pregnant. You will experience menstrual cramps, light spotting or bleeding before a week or two of your missed period.

Hi Starlight, pregnancy is very rarely possible through precum but it is possible. Take a pregnancy test 1 days after your missed period date.

I have no pregnancy sign aside being very hungry and urinating frequently. my period is due tomorrow, my home pregnancy test is negative. could I be pregnant? when next can I do home pregnancy test? thank u
Hi, You should take your pregnancy test 10 days after your missed period date to test your pregnancy accurately.
I had my period on April 23, 2016 and had unprotected sex on May 12, 2016 I have a regular cycle of 28 days. I am 5 weeks and 2 days pregnant. So it’s possible to get pregnant on cycle day 20?
Yes, it is possible.
can you explain how?
Can you explain if my menstrual cycle last for 5 to 6 days? So do you ovulate after you period? And do you count the 14 days after your period ends?
Hi Ava, starting from the LAST day of your cycle, count backwards 17 days. That day is the day that you are most likely to ovulate. Most women believe that they ovulate 14 days after their period starts, but that is not always true.
That don’t make sense
I had unprotected sex may 12th
Hi. I had unprotected sex on May 20 and my period was supposed to come on the 26th. My average cycle is 33 days. Is there a chance I could be pregnant?
The chances of becoming pregnant would be low since you may not have been fertile at that time.
