When you are having sex, pregnancy is always a real possibility. Sex, like other fun activities, comes with certain risks if you are not using protection, with STI’s and unwanted pregnancies being the most obvious ones.
If you want to know what’s the chance of getting pregnant if you had unprotected sex you have come to the right place.
Like others, you will hear many rumors about where and when you could get pregnant. For some women, the thought of getting pregnant is met with great joy and anticipation, while for others it’s a cause of worry.
This is why most women in the reproductive age or the ones who are trying desperately to conceive will have many questions or doubts about their chances of conceiving.
We will look further at this below to help you understand more about unprotected sex and pregnancy.
What’s the Chance of Getting Pregnant If You Had Unprotected Sex
There is a good chance that you could get pregnant nearly any time that you engage in sexual intercourse without using an effective birth control. This scenario is familiar to most women.
Pregnancy usually occurs around the ovulation period, the time when your ovary releases egg in the fallopian tube. If you are having regular periods, ovulation will take place midway between your menstrual periods.
Ovulation usually happens midway between the first-day of 2 consecutive periods, but this can vary from the eight day to the twentieth day of a 28-day cycle.
Researchers calculate the average risk at varying times in a monthly cycle of a woman, but you should know that your risk can be lower or higher.
You cannot know the definite time of your ovulation, which is why the researchers use the monthly cycle of a woman when calculating the average risk for pregnancy.
Figuring Out the Chances of Getting Pregnant If You Had Unprotected Sex
You are more likely to conceive if you have unprotected sex during the middle 2 weeks of your cycle. The time varies, but many women ovulate about day 14.
You will have the highest risk of pregnancy by having unprotected sex one or two days before your ovulation starts; when the ovary releases the egg.
This is a 30% chance. The risk of having unprotected sex and getting pregnant three days prior to ovulation is 15%. You will have a 12% chance on the ovulation day. [1]

In the real world, large studies show that women who engage in unprotected sex during mid-cycle have a much lower chance of getting pregnant as the risk is around 5.8%.
This is because you will have a much lower risk of getting pregnant if you engage in any sexual relations on the ovulation day and any day besides the three days prior to.
Not Getting Pregnant After Having Unprotected Sex for Months
There are times when having unprotected sex is not enough for you to get pregnant. You could be doing this for months with no luck.
Thankfully, there are certain things that you could do to increase your chances if it’s taking longer than expected for you to conceive.
This includes doing thinks like monitoring your ovulation, using an ovulation predictor kit, charting your basal body temperature, as well as checking and observing your cervical mucus.
When you have an idea of your ovulating time, you can start to time your sexual activities around that period. If you are using this method, you must ensure that you are having sex 2 days before your ovulation day or every other day during the week of your expected ovulation. This will boost your chances of conceiving.
If it’s a case where you have been engaging in unprotected sexual activities for more than six months without success, you could visit your doctor or ob/gyn to know about the alternative treatments that you could use for fertility problems. There are several solutions available and they are very effective.
How to Know When You Get Pregnant
The most common sign of pregnancy after unprotected sex is missed period. However, this missed or late period is not a sure sign as there are many other things that can cause it besides pregnancy.
This includes using birth control that contains hormones, stress, sickness, improper eating habits, or too much exercise.
It is pretty common for teens to have periods which come later than normal or missed periods because it could take several years for them to have a regular cycle.
So, the best way for you to know if you are pregnant is to do a pregnancy test. These are easy to get nowadays because they are available at drugstores or health centers.
It is important to note that the home pregnancy tests are ninety-nine percent accurate if taken after you miss a period.

We had sex on the 26st of May,I got my normal period on the 31st May. Then we had sex on the 16st of June. What are the chances of me getting pregnant?
According to your dates, if you are on a regular 28 day cycle, you may have been ovulating on the 16th. If your cycle has not started by July 5th-10th, I would recommend you take a pregnancy test.
I had sex with a guy on march 12 and my menstrual can on march 28. And i had sex with my boyfriend after that but im pregnant who can be the father
Hopefully you did not confuse implantation bleeding for your cycle. Was there anything different about it? Was it shorter or lighter than usual? Was there a change in color at any point? If not, your boyfriend is most likely the father. To be sure, I would advise getting a DNA test done once the child is born.
I had sex six days prior my ovulation can I be pregnant?
I had my period on the 2nd of June but I had unprotected Sex,but I use prevention pills after sex.i don’t know if I will get pregnant.
Hello Top, it is not impossible, but it is highly unlikely to conceive during your cycle. If you took the prevention pills immediately after intercourse, more than likely, you are not pregnant.
I had my last periods on 14th may and we had unprotected sex on 8th june…is it possible that I get pregnant.I have a 26-28 days periods cycle.
of course it is possible! like every time that you have unprotected sex! and especially if you have it near your ovulation, like in your case
My cycle is usually 30-31 days. I had my menstruation on April 30 then May 31. My boyfriend and I had sex last night (June 15, 2015) but the condom broke. I’m really worried. Please help.
The condom broke when you were ovulating (June 15th – June 19th) so the best thing to have done to try and avoid pregnancy would be to take a Morning After Pill. It could still work but might be less effective if you haven’t taken it by now. Go to the pharmacy and purchase one right away. You’re chances of pregnancy are higher during these days so that option is your best bet.
Me and my boyfriend just had unprotected sex. He ejaculated in me. I’m on my period but near the end or middle. My periods have always been weird and off. Since my last period and this period it lasted 26 days. I just want to know what my chances are of getting pregnant. Lately thought my period has been going every three weeks. But I’ve been like maybe a day or two days late getting my period or couple days early. I’m rarely getting it on the day I’m due.
Even though getting pregnant on your period is not impossible, it’s not very likely that you’re pregnant. It sounds as though your period is irregular. You should go and speak to your doctor about it so he/she can tell you what’s happening.
I had unprotected sex for a couple of hours with my boyfriend. He put a condom on later and came in it. We immediately went to bed after (he didn’t pee, or clean himself) then the next morning we had unprotected sex again and he pulled out and came on my ass. It was the day I was ovulating. I’m 17 and have regular periods. What are the chances of me being pregnant?
Hi it’s slim to none that you could get pregnant he didn’t actully ejaulate inside you and once sperm hits the air it dies. So your chances are almost nothing unless he ejaculates in side of you. Hope this helps.
Same as u .. I also took a pill 21 hours later after sex .. is there any chances of getting pragnant ???
Hi um I had unprotected sex on the 11th of May the day before I ovulated I was very worried cause just days after that my boobs were very sensitive and my nipples painful…On the 22nd of May I took a pregnancy test but it came out negative two days after that I got my periods and it’s been almost 3 weeks but I get nauseous I crave things I never eat and ja I pee a lot and also become tired very quickly too…please help
I’m literally in the exact same position! just going to hope my period comes again this month
If you have a regular 28 day cycle, your next menstrual period is expected to start on June 21, 2015 so don’t be alarmed just yet, you haven’t missed your period for this month. However, having intercourse right before you ovulate is actually one of the best days to have sex if you’re trying to conceive. If you’re not trying to get pregnancy then definitely avoid the days of the month when you’re ovulating, it increases your chances of conception more than the other days of your cycle. Your symptoms could be caused by something else, not necessary something to be alarmed about but the best thing to do is to ask your doctor.
On Monday May 25th I had sex without a condom. I am on the pill, and he pulled out. I got my period the next day. I was supposed to start a new pill pack after the 4 placebos on Saturday May 30th. However, the pharmacy was out of my pill and I had to call last minute because I was on vacation. I couldn’t start my new pill pack until Monday June 1st (2 days late). For the past 2 days (May 14th and 15th) I have been feeling very unusual, nauseous & lightheaded. I am very very worried that I am pregnant as I don’t know what else could explain these symptoms. What are the chances, and when can I take a test?
Hi Sarah. I’m guessing you meant (June 14th & 15th). If you are on a regular cycle then you were most likely to conceive between the 7th and the 11th of June. You didn’t mention having intercourse after the 25th and even though you started the next pack of pills late, it’s not likely that you’re pregnant because you had intercourse right before your last period so look out for the next one on June 23rd. If your period is very late for this month then you should see a doctor. Otherwise, you should be ok.
Can someone help me quick , my girlfriend starts her pill tomorrow , me and her had unprotected sex yesterday and her fertility is 3 days from today is she probably not pregnant?
Hi Ray. If you mean that she starts ovulating on the 18th then yes, she could still get pregnant. If she starts the birth control pill within five days after the start of her period, she’s protected right away. If she starts at any other time during her cycle, you’ll need to use a backup form of birth control — like a condom — for seven days because the pill won’t be effective immediately so yes there’s still a chance for pregnancy. A Morning After Pill could’ve lessen the chances but would be less effective if she hasn’t taken it by now. Remember these two pills work differently.
hi,my girlfriend started menstrual flow on 25th may and ended on 27th ,we had unprotected sex on 29- 31may and she now complains of nausea .does that mean she is pregnant?
In just a matter of days it’s highly unlikely she’s feeling morning sickness. It doesn’t rule out she could be pregnant but you won’t know until she misses her next period or takes a home pregnancy test 5 days before her missed period.
Not necessarily. Maybe she just isn’t feeling well. It’s not likely to be pregnancy since she wasn’t close to ovulating when you had unprotected sex but that doesn’t mean that a pregnancy can’t happen, it’s just less likely to occur. Also, her period is very short and she needs to see a doctor if she’s having her period only 2 full days for the month. 3-5 days would be ok but 2 is too short.
Hello, I really don’t know how this ovulation thing works but I can tell you that my period in May started around the 14 th or 15th and ended on the 22nd of May…my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex on the 5th of June I am now what it seems to be on my period it started yesterday but it is lighter than normal and I am having minor cramps than usual …could this be implantation bleeding? Or is it due to stress or a shift in exercising or something? I am really scared at this point
Hi Lisa. An 8 day cycle is a bit longer than normal. If it’s normally 31 days apart then you would’ve been ovulating between May 29th and June 2nd. It’s not likely that you’re pregnant since your period came. Your cycle is longer than normal so you may not have a regular flow each time for that same reason. It may be lighter but pay attention to how long it lasts. If you are stressed then yes, a lighter period could be a side effect of that but the best way to tell is to consult with your doctor.
Hi,
Me and my Bf are trying to get pregos. In may my period only lasted 2 days and we were trying even in April having unprotected sex every two days in april. My 2 days long period was on the 18th May and when it finished we have been having unprotected sex till today every second/third day. i don’t know what could have caused my period to last two days in May maybe stress. So i can’t determine if my period is late or am i pregos .i’ve been having cramps throughout the month but mild. when should i take the preg test?
You need to set an appointment with your doctor. You’re period should not be 2 days, this isn’t considered normal so you have an irregular cycle and in this case, pregnancy tests aren’t the best way to go if you want to be sure. When you’re cycle is irregular, it’s hard for you to tell when you’ll have your period and when you’re late/pregnant. He/She will have to do some tests and will better be able to tell you your best days to try conceiving.
My cycle has been following a weird pattern
14th March 9th April 12th May
It is difficult for me to predict my ovulation date and had unprotected sex on 30th May after 12 in the night. It was bf’s third time of the day though. I havent got my cycle yet but i have absolutely no symptoms of pregnancy either. Im terribly confused and worried. I don’t wish to be pregnant and can’t be open about it to family
please help
Hi Kiara. You’re cycle may be irregular. Your March cycle was 26 days apart from the next one and the next was 33 days apart until it came on May 12th (an extra week added). On June 14th that’s another 33 days. It may be that your period is irregular. It could still appear in a few days, it’s not necessarily pregnancy causing the delay; if it’s irregular then there’s no set time to expect your period. You should still see a doctor and let him/her know what’s happening with your cycle. If you do not want to conceive, please use some form of birth control to help lessen your chances because it’s hard to calculate for sure when you’d be ovulating.
I had unprotected sex on day 6, 13 and 14 of my cycle. I normally get my period between 27 and 29 days. Could I be pregnant ?
