When you are having sex, pregnancy is always a real possibility. Sex, like other fun activities, comes with certain risks if you are not using protection, with STI’s and unwanted pregnancies being the most obvious ones.
If you want to know what’s the chance of getting pregnant if you had unprotected sex you have come to the right place.
Like others, you will hear many rumors about where and when you could get pregnant. For some women, the thought of getting pregnant is met with great joy and anticipation, while for others it’s a cause of worry.
This is why most women in the reproductive age or the ones who are trying desperately to conceive will have many questions or doubts about their chances of conceiving.
We will look further at this below to help you understand more about unprotected sex and pregnancy.
What’s the Chance of Getting Pregnant If You Had Unprotected Sex
There is a good chance that you could get pregnant nearly any time that you engage in sexual intercourse without using an effective birth control. This scenario is familiar to most women.
Pregnancy usually occurs around the ovulation period, the time when your ovary releases egg in the fallopian tube. If you are having regular periods, ovulation will take place midway between your menstrual periods.
Ovulation usually happens midway between the first-day of 2 consecutive periods, but this can vary from the eight day to the twentieth day of a 28-day cycle.
Researchers calculate the average risk at varying times in a monthly cycle of a woman, but you should know that your risk can be lower or higher.
You cannot know the definite time of your ovulation, which is why the researchers use the monthly cycle of a woman when calculating the average risk for pregnancy.
Figuring Out the Chances of Getting Pregnant If You Had Unprotected Sex
You are more likely to conceive if you have unprotected sex during the middle 2 weeks of your cycle. The time varies, but many women ovulate about day 14.
You will have the highest risk of pregnancy by having unprotected sex one or two days before your ovulation starts; when the ovary releases the egg.
This is a 30% chance. The risk of having unprotected sex and getting pregnant three days prior to ovulation is 15%. You will have a 12% chance on the ovulation day. [1]

In the real world, large studies show that women who engage in unprotected sex during mid-cycle have a much lower chance of getting pregnant as the risk is around 5.8%.
This is because you will have a much lower risk of getting pregnant if you engage in any sexual relations on the ovulation day and any day besides the three days prior to.
Not Getting Pregnant After Having Unprotected Sex for Months
There are times when having unprotected sex is not enough for you to get pregnant. You could be doing this for months with no luck.
Thankfully, there are certain things that you could do to increase your chances if it’s taking longer than expected for you to conceive.
This includes doing thinks like monitoring your ovulation, using an ovulation predictor kit, charting your basal body temperature, as well as checking and observing your cervical mucus.
When you have an idea of your ovulating time, you can start to time your sexual activities around that period. If you are using this method, you must ensure that you are having sex 2 days before your ovulation day or every other day during the week of your expected ovulation. This will boost your chances of conceiving.
If it’s a case where you have been engaging in unprotected sexual activities for more than six months without success, you could visit your doctor or ob/gyn to know about the alternative treatments that you could use for fertility problems. There are several solutions available and they are very effective.
How to Know When You Get Pregnant
The most common sign of pregnancy after unprotected sex is missed period. However, this missed or late period is not a sure sign as there are many other things that can cause it besides pregnancy.
This includes using birth control that contains hormones, stress, sickness, improper eating habits, or too much exercise.
It is pretty common for teens to have periods which come later than normal or missed periods because it could take several years for them to have a regular cycle.
So, the best way for you to know if you are pregnant is to do a pregnancy test. These are easy to get nowadays because they are available at drugstores or health centers.
It is important to note that the home pregnancy tests are ninety-nine percent accurate if taken after you miss a period.

My periods are always irregular! I came off the pill and I didn’t get my period for about 9 months. I’ve had it twice since then, the first time was the 17th and the second was I think around the 20th. Me and my boyfriend are aways having unprotected sex, but we are very careful seeing as I’m only 16. I’m worried because it’s the 20th now and we had unprotected sex on the 18th . Are the chances of me being pregnant high if we did it right before I was supposed to get my period?? I’m really worried!!!
My last period ended on 7th July and I had unprotected sex on 11th July what is my likelihood of pregnancy even though I took salt water solution after it?
Knowing the start date of your period is essential in determining your fertile days and the likelihood of you being pregnant. A salt water solution has not been proven to be an effective birth control method; it is not known to prevent pregnancies.
Hello, I’m 24 years old and married. I had unprotected sex on 21st of June and experienced some light spotting on the 24th – 25th of June. My last monthly period was the 11th of June. My menses were always regular and always before my menses I experienced breast tenderness 10 days before but this time it’s 19th July but I had no menses even though I’m having breast tenderness which started on the 5th. I did a pregnancy test on 16th July but it was negative. Please tell me am I really pregnant?
If you have a 28 days cycle then you were ovulating at the time you had sex. This blog will help you to determine the best time to take a pregnancy test http://womanjunction.com/home-pregnancy-test/
Ok I just looked up my dates and all. My fertile week was from July/04-July/08 give or take. I know it said I ovulate d on July/7 , well my husband and I had unprotected sex on July/4 at 1am he did let lose in me. Well on July/8 I had very bad period like cramps were both of my ovaries hurt, it finally eased up threw out the day. On July/12 I took a clear blue non digital that said a faint positive, all others said negative! I do not have pregnancy symptoms but, I did not have any on my second child. Also I had to wait to miss my period. My question is how liked is it that I am pregnant.
Hi everybody. I last had my period on June 13. It ended on the 17th. And on June 22nd I had sex. Two hours later I took the morning after pill because I was a little paranoid. Five days later I started to bleed brown and red mixed together but I thought that was just an effect of the pill. But, ever since then I have been cramping and now I’m days late for my period. Today I woke up with some back pain. I don’t have any other pregnancy symptoms other than cramps and back pain. I also took two pregnancy tests and both were negative. Could I be pregnant? Please help!
The morning after pill can delay your period and disrupt your menstrual cycle. Have you had your period as yet? If you have regular periods and you took the tests at least two days after your period was due then you should get a true pregnancy test reading. The symptoms may be related to PMS.
Me and my boyfriend are trying to fall pregnant. It’s been 6 months now and still not pregnant and not going on my periods. What would this mean?
If you have missed your period for six months and you’re not pregnant, you need to see a medical doctor to determine what’s wrong.
I had my period on June 22-26. My boyfriend and I had sex July 17 at 12am and my period later started at 4pm. Yes, we had unprotected sex. He is freaking out because he has never had a female period start within the same day, so to speak. I normally have a regular period…it never comes early. I have no idea what’s going on. Help me please.
My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex July 17, but he did not ejaculate. My ovulation date is July 16, should I be good?
There is always a slight possibility that small amounts of sperm could have been released from your partner although he did not ejaculate. The chances are extremely low so you should wait to see if your next period will come.
The 1st day of my last period was July 3…I had unprotected sex early morning of the 14th..would I be likely to get pregnant on that day…
It is possible that the sperm released on that day would be ready and waiting for the fertile egg released on the 15th.
Hello,
My husband and I ALWAYS have unprotected sex since we got married (3 years ago). My period has always been irregular since my teenage years. But…I haven’t had my period now since May (I think 2nd or 3rd week of May), which is more delayed than usual. I took 2 pregnancy tests at home. First one was 2 weeks ago which came back negative, and 2nd one I took last week also came back negative. But this is by far the weirdest I felt (if it is a period). I am feeling all symptoms of PMS and early signs of pregnancy (I know they are similar). By breasts are very swollen and I am feeling lower back aches, cramps, a little nauseous in the day time, weird rubber smells, etc… Is it possible I AM in fact, pregnant? I plan to schedule an appointment with the doctor but wanted to get some feedback first. I may take another home pregnancy test, maybe a different brand this time. Thank you for your time.
It’s difficult to tell if you’re pregnant by the symptoms only, especially since you’ve been trying to get pregnant for so long. It’s best to schedule the appointment with your doctor and take it from there.
My last period was 4th July. And my age is 24. I’m trying to get pregnant. I had sex these consecutive (12th to 15th) last four days. My question is – I want to know is it correct way to get pregnant having sex once everyday?
The best way to increase your chances of getting of getting pregnant is by having sex on your fertile days. In order to determine your fertile days, you must know the length of your menstrual cycle and whether you have a regular or irregular cycle. If you a regular 28 days then ovulation would usually occur on the 14th to 18th day.
My cycle is 28 days I ovulated on day 15 had unprotected sex with my boyfriend on day 18. My period tracker/calendar (which has always been 100% accurate with my period) told me my chances of pregnancy were “medium” that day and three days after that my chances were “low”. So far its been 8 days since ovulation and I’m supposed to get my period in 6 days. Obviously if I get my period by then I’ll know I’m not pregnant. To me, it sounds like I’m not but I’d really appreciate a second, third, or even 13th opinion. Maybe I’m interpreting this field of biology all wrong and if I am and I just want to be sure if I should be experiencing the first signs of pregnancy or not. I’ve had no symptoms whatsoever. Not even the implantation spotting some women get a week before their period is supposed to come. I know for sure he did not ejaculate inside me because he pulled out and i noticed there was a very very small amount of sperm (we assume because he smokes a lot of weed) but I’m still worried I may be pregnant. I mean…just because there are no symptoms doesn’t mean there is zero possibility.
Not all women experience the same pregnancy symptoms; some women do not experience the typical pregnancy symptoms at all. Having unprotected sex increases your chance of conceiving so a woman could be pregnant and not show any symptoms. Though you’re anxious, you still have to wait and see if your period will come within the 6 days and then take it from there.
So my girlfriend and I had unprotected sex around June 14th. She IS on a birth control pill but about two weeks after, she kept vomiting and feeling sick to her stomach. She was 4 days late on her period until she got it for 5 days. She is no longer worried that she could be, but I am still freaked out because she has headaches every once in a while and has been getting tired pretty early lately. Could she be pregnant or are the chances low? I need an answer; I keep having anxiety attacks. Also please don’t tell me to buy a pregnancy test because it’s not easy for me to get those.
Based on the information provided the chances seem very low. Though it is a challenge for you to get a pregnancy test done, once it is used at the right time, it is the most effective method of determining if she’s pregnant.
This may be a dumb question but according to my period tracker I had sex on my ovulation day of June 21st, was due for and did get my period on July 3rd. Is this the period I’d miss if I were pregnant only 2 weeks after or the following? Because I thought usually I’d find out about 6 weeks in?? Do I still need to be concerned or am I good since I did have a period two weeks later?
I had my last periods on June 11th and had protected sex on 5th of July and he didn’t ejaculate. But I didn’t have periods still this month? Is there a chance of being pregnant?
If you had protected and your partner did not ejaculate, then your chances of getting pregnant would be very slim. There are many factors that can cause your period to be delayed; they are outlined in the following post http://womanjunction.com/8-mess-period/
I had sex in the month of April … after that I had periods on 29 April, then in May and June. I had taken pregnancy home tests twice both times they were negative. Am I pregnant?
You may not be pregnant since the tests were negative. You must have sex on your fertile days in order to increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
