Female fertility is an area of tremendous importance and ongoing research, as countless women try to conceive but are simply unable to do so. There are plenty of high-tech, expensive methods for achieving conception like in vitro, fertility counseling, and others.
However, many women are not aware of a more affordable option which is definitely worth investing in prior to getting involved in complicated and expensive fertility methods. An ovulation predictor is an ingenious, easy to use device which can help women anticipate their most fertile periods, which may lead to a greater change of conceiving.
The first and most important aspect of ovulation predictor kits is understanding exactly how they work. There are several types of ovulation kits, but in this post we’ll focus on the most common ovulation predictors.
These kits measure the level of luteinizing hormone (LH) present in your body. A strong surge in LH occurs just before ovulation, so this is a very reliable indicator that a woman is approaching her most fertile state. [1]
Ovulation predictor accuracy is relatively reliable, however, bear in mind that it is possible for a woman’s body to experience an LH surge without releasing an egg. That being the case, an ovulation predictor can sometimes return a false positive result.
IS AN OVULATION PREDICTOR KIT RIGHT FOR YOU?
These kits are especially helpful for:
- Women who have irregular periods that make it difficult to predict fertile days.
- When regular sex is difficult because the couple is apart most of the time. That is, you and your partner hardly get the opportunity to do the deed because of separate work locations and schedules.
- When regular sex is difficult because of busy schedules or there are other children that limit opportunities to have lots of sex.
- When you have not fallen pregnant but have been trying to conceive for a while.
- When you want to get pregnant the soonest time possible, and a kit is one way to speed up the process.
Benefits of ovulation kits
Using an ovulation predictor has a number of benefits. First of all, the kits can be used in the privacy of your own home, saving you time and money that may be spent on trips to the doctor or a fertility counselor.
In the same vein, you can buy an ovulation predictor without a prescription, and many drug stores will have a selection of ovulation predictor strips to choose from. There are also plenty of online resources which carry ovulation predictor kits.
Many women who are trying to conceive try using what are known as ovulation calendars. These are a somewhat “low-tech” way to track fertility and the best times for trying to conceive. Women use an ovulation predictor calendar to manually keep track of the start and stop dates of their monthly cycle.
After a few months, women can deduce the trend and the most likely timing of their next cycle, and can use that information in determining when their most fertile period will be.
An ovulation predictor provides a much more sophisticated way of doing this. By simply urinating on a stick and inserting it into the included machine, the monitor will display your level of fertility, no matter what stage of your menstrual cycle you are in. Again, this is made possible because the monitor simply gauges your LH level.
For women with regular cycles, these are a great benefit since it does not require daily handwritten charting. For those women whose cycle is somewhat irregular, ovulation predictor kits are a godsend, since they can be used instantly to determine the level of fertility.
Irregular cycles would be very tedious to track in a traditional ovulation calendar.
DOWNSIDES OF AN OVULATION PREDICTOR KIT
An ovulation predictor kit also has its shares of disadvantages, something couples trying to conceive should be fully aware of.
It does not test for ovulation.
While a predictor kit measures a surge of LH that indicates a potential ovulation, it does not confirm that you are actually ovulating.
A luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome (LUFS) can still occur even after a surge of LH. This is a condition when an egg fails to emerge from its follicle.
It does not indicate fertilization conditions.
For a sperm to swim through and fertilize an egg, the cervix must provide a fertile environment. This is characterized by the cervical mucus produced mid-cycle that is clear and elastic or with the consistency of an egg white.
It would have been great if a predictor kit can monitor the conditions of a cervical mucus so you will know that your cervix is conducive to fertilization. Unfortunately, the kit does not work this way.
It can be affected by certain fertility drugs.
If you are using Pergonal or other injectable fertility drugs, the ovulation predictor kit will become less reliable. In this case, you’ll have to sacrifice one for the other. [2, 3]
Its consistency is questionable for women over 40.
Because women at this age or those approaching menopause show increased levels of LH, any tests done using the predictor kit becomes invalid.
The chances of you getting pregnant with the help of the kit are pretty slim.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
Test results can be affected by:
- Drugs that containing hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) or
- Drugs that contain LH
- The fertility drug Clomid
Between urine-based LH tests and salivary ferning tests, the former is 99% more accurate in detecting the surge of LH before ovulation.
Neither is foolproof.
Salivary ferning tests are not advised for use by those with poor eyesight.
Choosing the right ovulation predictor kit can make a significant difference when you’re trying to conceive. You want a reliable, easy-to-use solution that fits your budget and lifestyle, helping you pinpoint your fertile window with confidence.
Understanding your ovulation cycle isn’t just about timing; it’s about feeling in control of your fertility journey. With the right tools, you can reduce the guesswork, avoid unnecessary stress, and increase your chances of conception. This article will guide you through the essential features to look for and present 10 of the best options on the market to meet a variety of needs and preferences.

How to Choose the Right Ovulation Predictor Kit
When selecting an ovulation predictor kit, you should consider several key factors that will impact how well the product fits your needs. First, assess the type of test: basic ovulation strips detect the LH surge qualitatively, while advanced kits and monitors can provide quantitative results or track multiple hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Accuracy and ease of reading results matter — you want clear, unambiguous indicators of your fertile window.
Integration with apps can be beneficial if you prefer digital tracking and analysis. Consider the number of tests included and pricing, especially if you have irregular cycles and need to test frequently.

FAQ
How Do I Choose the Right Ovulation Predictor Kit for My Needs?
Choosing the right ovulation predictor kit depends largely on your cycle regularity, budget, and how detailed you want your tracking to be. If you have a regular cycle and want a simple, affordable method, basic ovulation test strips like the Wondfo 50 Count at around $11.96 USD offer reliable and easy-to-read results by detecting the LH surge.
If you prefer digital convenience and hormone tracking beyond just LH, devices like the Clearblue Fertility Monitor or the Inito Fertility Monitor (priced higher at about $36.11 USD and $119.00 USD respectively) track multiple hormones for a broader fertile window and tend to minimize guesswork. For irregular cycles or conditions like PCOS, advanced trackers such as kegg or femometer ring provide personalized data that can help you pinpoint fertile days more effectively. Also, consider whether you want a product that integrates with an app to log results, which can help you spot patterns over time. Ultimately, choose a kit that fits your lifestyle, offers clear instructions, and feels comfortable for you to use consistently.
Are Digital Ovulation Kits Worth the Extra Cost Compared to Test Strips?
Digital kits often come with higher price tags, sometimes around $40 or more, but they provide benefits that some find worth the investment. They typically track multiple hormones, like LH and estrogen, offering a wider fertile window and clearer indicators such as a digital smiley face or fertility score, which removes the need to interpret line darkness.
However, test strips like those from Wondfo or Easy@Home are very affordable (usually under $20 for many tests) and give you reliable results if you’re comfortable reading the lines yourself. You can also test more frequently with strips thanks to their low cost, which is helpful if your LH surge window is short. Digital devices can be user-friendly and reduce stress related to reading results incorrectly but sometimes require purchasing replacement parts or test sticks separately, adding to long-term costs. So if budget is a concern and you’re confident interpreting the lines, test strips are a smart choice.
But if you want simplicity and detailed tracking with less guesswork, digital kits can be beneficial.
What Are the Best Tips for Using Ovulation Predictor Kits Effectively?
To get the most accurate results, it helps to test at the same time each day, ideally in the mid-morning or early afternoon; some fertility experts recommend avoiding first morning urine because LH surge may be diluted overnight. Make sure you follow each test’s instructions carefully, including how long to dip or hold the test strip and how long to wait before reading results—typically 5 minutes.
For strips, remember that a positive result happens when the test line is as dark or darker than the control line; a faint second line is still negative. Consistent daily testing starting a few days before your expected ovulation window increases your chance of catching the LH surge, especially if your cycle is irregular. Also, keep in mind hydration levels—excessive fluid intake before testing can dilute your urine and affect accuracy.
Using a cup to collect urine for dipping strips can be cleaner and less stressful than peeing directly on the test. Lastly, consider pairing test results with other fertility signs like basal body temperature or cervical mucus changes for a more complete picture of your fertile window.
Wrapping Up
In summary, picking the right ovulation predictor kit is about matching the product’s features with your personal fertility goals, cycle regularity, budget, and lifestyle. Reliable detection of your fertile window can empower your conception journey by turning the unknown into a clear plan. Whether you opt for affordable strips like Wondfo, high-tech monitors like Inito or Clearblue, or wearables such as the femometer ring, each has unique strengths that can benefit you in different ways.
By understanding what to look for and choosing thoughtfully, you can save time, reduce stress, and improve your chances of becoming pregnant. Your fertility journey is unique, and with the right kit, you’re better equipped to navigate it successfully.

Hi,
My wife had her period from the 13th to the 15th of October 2018. We’ve been trying for more than a year for her to conceive.
Please tell me on which days she’s most likely to get pregnant.
She tells me she has a 28 day cycle.
Hi Jude, her fertile period would be from the 23rd to the 27th of this month. If you have been trying for a year however to get pregnant I would get in contact with a fertility specialist for both of you. Then you can test both yours and her fertility. It could be either of you. Good luck trying.
Hi I had my menses in 21 of February ended 25,had sex on 3rd of march now am scared I don’t know if am preggy
Hi Bose, It’s quite possible that you could be pregnant. THat falls right at the beginning of your fertile period if you are on a 28 day cycle roughly. I would wait to determine the outcome though until after the 22nd which is your rough anticipation for your next period.

Hi, I had my period on Nov 22nd and it ended Nov 27th. When is my ovulation day and can you experience symptoms before that?
Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the start of your menstrual period. If your cycle lasts for 28 days, you can ovulate on the 14th day like the average female. However, you will start ovulating around the 11th day if you have periods 25 days apart. So when you ovulate depends on the number of days in your cycle.
The ovulation signs include changes in body temperature, cervical mucus and hormone levels. Pain in the ovaries may also be experienced. Read this post http://womanjunction.com/usual-ovulation-symptoms/ to learn about some other common ovulation symptoms.

I need to know my period and ovulation ,I saw my menses on the 7the of last month, when should I make love
Hi,
the best way to conceive, on regular and irregular cycle is to have intimacy every second day during your fertility window. Which is day 10 to 18 of your cycle, day 1 being the first day of your period. This will allow more mature spermatozoids to be released and as they live 72h in the womb … there will always be some present, you will then not miss your ovulation.
good luck
what’s the difference between saliva based and urine based ovulation tests? which one would you recommend?
