There is a widespread problem that exists among many couples who are sexually active. It is that they are relying on what is considered the safe period of the month to engage in sexual activities without taking any precaution.
The odds of a woman getting pregnant after having sex right after her period is low, but it could actually happen to anyone. If you need to know more, then read on as this article seeks to answer the question of can you get pregnant just after your period ends?
It is possible for you to conceive right after your period ends as this time you are just starting to enter your fertility window. However, your chances will be very low in reality.
If you are having sex without using any birth control method, you can get pregnant or conceive at any time in your menstrual cycle, including during or immediately after your period. It will all come down to how long your menstruation lasts and the actual length of your menstrual cycle.
Understanding the Menstrual Cycle
In case you are not aware of this, your menstrual cycle will start on day one of your period and last up to day one of your next period.
Your most fertile time will be at ovulation – happens when your ovaries release an egg – which normally takes place twelve to fourteen days before the start of the next period.
This period is called the fertile window, and it’s the time when you’re more likely to conceive.
For a typical cycle that takes place every twenty-eight to thirty days, this fertility window is normally between day eleven and twenty-one.
It is important to point out that the sperm can survive inside the body sometimes for as much as seven days after a woman has sex.
You will be approaching your fertile window if your period last for five to seven days and you engage in sex immediately after.
This means you could get pregnant very soon after your period ends if you ovulate early, particularly if your menstrual cycle is naturally short.
If you have a short cycle and long periods, it is still possible for your ovaries to release an egg very quickly after your period ends. This egg can get fertilized as normal, and pregnancy occurs if and when that happens.
Of course, you should also remember that your chances of getting pregnant immediately after your period will increase each day after the bleeding stops.
If you have been trying to conceive desperately, then this will be a good time to have sex to increase your chances.
More Information about Your Chances of Conceiving
In addition to the above, you can get pregnant or conceive if your period has never come before, throughout your first period, or immediately after having sex for the first time.
It is also quite possible for you to become pregnant throughout the alleged safe period of the month even when your partner withdraws his penis before ejaculating.
Semen is normally released during sex, including the precum one, so any form of sex without protection could result in pregnancy.
There are also rare instances when women end up pregnant even though they did not have penetrative sex with their partner.
The sperm can be very resilient, lasting up to several days following ejaculation. This means that pregnancy is a definite possibility if either one of you has sperm on your hands or any other part of your body, and it comes in contact with your vagina.
If you are looking to conceive or get pregnant, one of the best ways to increase your chances is to invest in an ovulation testing kit.
There are many different types available today, ranging from the simple strips which test the urine to the digital computers which monitor things monthly.
It is often more difficult for women to detect ovulation without these tests.
Another, less accurate method of detecting ovulation is to measure basal body temperature (BBT). It is a widely used way to detect ovulation due to ease of the test.
In this method, women need to measure body temperature each day in the morning before starting any kind of activity. Ovulation is marked by 0.5-1.0° F rise in the BBT.
It is worth knowing that BBT test is less accurate than ovulation testing kits, and may fail to detect ovulation in some cases.
Bottom Line
There is really no safe period of the month to engage in sexual activities without using contraception and avoid getting pregnant. You could even conceive if you have sex during your period.
However, you will be more fertile at certain times during your menstrual cycle, and this is the period when you are more likely to conceive. At times, ovulation can occur within a few days after your period ends.
In addition, sperm could fertilize an egg three days or seventy-two hours after ejaculation. Aside from the chances of becoming pregnant, you also have the risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease, such as genital warts, chlamydia, or HIV/AIDs, so you should use contraception at all times when having sex.
If not, abstinence is the only sure way to avoid unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. You can talk to your medical doctor about the different contraception methods available to you.

Hello Bianca, take a pregnancy test 7 days after your missed period to determine this.
Hi, my first day of my cycle was February 19, ended on the 23. Been having unprotected sex since then.. I have been using the bathroom more. My breast feel heavy but not sore.. is there a chance I could be pregnant
Hello Shay, yes, you might be pregnant.
Hi my name is Chris I had my period on 3 February and ended on 7 I had sex from 8 to 13. my due period was 2nd March it comes on 28th February can I be pregnant
Hello Chris, this does not necessarily mean you are pregnant.
Hi, I had my birth control implant removed on February 20th. And then had a very heavy & painful period 3 days later, that lasted about 7 days, it was only heavy for about 3-4 days. My bf & I had unprotected sex yesterday, and still plan to for the next several days. What are my chances of getting pregnant this month?
Hi Kassy, If you had unprotected sex during that period of time you may very well get pregnant. You fertile period was from roughly the 5th to the 9th of March. You can always check https://womanjunction.com To determine when your fertile periods are if you don’t get it this month. However, good luck!
Im Sando. my period was on 15- 18 Febr 2018. On 21 Febr 2018 had unprotected sex twice. and also on the 26 febr 2018 had unprotected sex could i be pregnant?
Hi Sando, yes you could be. The 26th would have most likely been the date you could have gotten pregnant based on the calculator at . I would wait to test until a few days after your missed period which is anticipated around the 15th if you are on a 28 day cycle.
I had my period October 16-20,2017 then had sex on the 23 is it possible I can be pregnant if I ovulate on the 30?
Hi Sarah, You’re asking about October, which at this point I would imagine you would know already. However, generally no, that would not lead to a pregnancy as you still had about 4 days before you were even in your fertile period.
Hi, my names Ariana and I was on my period from Feb 23 through today, Feb 28th. I got off of it this morning, but I recently had sex. About an hour ago already, it was unprotected sex, but he did withdraw before ejaculating.. could I get pregnant still even if no sperm went inside me?
Hi Ariana, could you, technically yes if there was pre-ejaculation. Is it during your fertile window, no.
Hello i had my period Jan 29th- Feb 6th, Had unprotected sex on Feb 9th- Feb 11, then again on Feb 22-25th, i been feeling bloated and my breast is becoming sensative is possible that i might be pregnant?
Hi Tania, Yes you could be. From the 9th to the 11th would have occurred during your fertile period. If you haven’t gotten your period at this point I would take a test if you haven’t already. Good luck!
my periods started on 13 feb and ended on 19 feb .then I had unprotected sex on 19 feb and next day i took I-pill .
After that on 27 feb i had unprotected sex again and next day my period started.why
Hi Preety, if you are asking why your period started, taking the morning after pill can cause a change in your period due to the addition of hormones in your body.
Hello I’m Lou. I have PCOS and started my pill last Feb 21 1st day of period and lasted 4 days. We did the deed and my man finished inside me last 27 2 days after my period ends. Is there any chance I can get pregnant?
Hi Louise, is this the first time you’re on birth control? If so I would consider a back up form of protection for the first month. Otherwise, generally two days after your period you won’t be fertile, that’s however only if you have a regular cycle every month and know when you are ovulating.
Hi,i had sex with my boyfriend 2 days after my last period..is there possibilities that I could be pregnant?
Hi Sarah, Generally you would be outside of your fertile window by a few days as the fertile window is about 6 days after your period ended. But that also depends on how regular you are.
Hi I’m having a hard time right now but I had my cycle Jan 26, 18 and now it’s feb I had sex before and after my period in Jan. It’s now the 28 and still no period. I have had cramps sore breast increase in sleep the last time I had unprotected sex with my bf was feb 17th. I took a test came back negative but where is my period could it be to early to test I went on pregnancy tracker and according to my last period I’m 4 weeks 3 days but even today feb 28 I still feel cramping pain in back and thighs it’s very frustrating.
Hi Stacy, According to the tracker you could have had your period around the 23rd of February. We are now about 2 weeks past that. February 17th would have put you outside your fertile window if you are regular every month. I would take another test and if it’s negative I would potentially contact your doctor, especially if you aren’t on a birth control that would shorten/stop your period.
Hi good day me and my partner had unprotected sex February 14 and i saw my period on the 17 which lasted about two to three days i want to know if it possible that i would be pregnant for next month all so i have been using the rest room a lot feeling fatty tiredness and sleeping a lot would i be expecting for next month
Hello Carline, you can wait around for the next month to see if you are pregnant or take a pregnancy test. It is hard to determine in this case.
Hi,
I started my period February 13th, it ended on the 17th. I’ve been having sex with my boyfriend since the 18th and until now. I’ve noticed my boobs are sore now (my boobs are only sore when my period about to come on) & I’ve been having cramps like my periods on. Could I be pregnant
Hello Jazz, yes you might be pregnant.
I took a test today it was negative, is it possible it’s to early to find out?
Hi Jazz, yes it could have been. You should try to test at the end of this week as with a 28 day cycle, you would only be expecting it within a day or two from now the 13th. You could always take one now but it might still be negative even if you are pregnant. Good luck!
Hi my name is Laura,my period started on the 7th of February and ended on 11th.
