Introduction
If you want to stand the best chance of getting pregnant, then you need to know when you are ovulating. This is the time of the month when women are in their most fertile period. Ovulation usually happens around day 14 of the cycle [1]), while there is a greater chance of a sperm reaching the egg and fertilizing it.
However, one of the biggest problems and question that people have is knowing how to calculate their next ovulation date and when is the best time to aim for intercourse. This is where technology can come in handy. You can use an ovulation calculator, like the one below, to get a rough estimate of when you are going to ovulate next.
Ovulation & Period Calculator
Use this period calculator to calculate your next period (menstruation), fertile period, ovulation, and due date. To give you an estimate as to when those time frames are, please provide the requested information and press the Calculate button (results will be shown below, together with a fertility calendar):
When did your last period start?
How many days did it last?
How long is your cycle?
Below are the results based on the information you provided:
Your next menstrual period is expected to start on
Your next most fertile period is from to
If you conceive within this timeframe, your estimated due date will be
- Pre-Period
- Period Days
- Post-Period
- Peak Ovulation
Please note that this is only an estimation of your menstrual cycle
A period calculator is not the same as talking to a healthcare professional, so this is just to aid you in coming up with the most accurate calculation possible, on your own.
Also, keep in mind that these calculators will be useful to women with a fairly regular menstrual cycle. For women with irregular menstrual cycle tracking other ovulation symptoms or using an ovulation predictor kit might give more accurate results, all of which we’ll cover later one.
How Do Menstrual Cycle Calculators Work?
Menstrual Cycle Calculators vary in complexity. Some will ask you for information such as your average body temperature, as well as various other bits and pieces about what your body is currently going through.
While there are women who measure their basal body temperature, it’s not something that the everyday woman uses.
However, it is a rather accurate way (when done 100% correctly) to determine when a woman is ovulating.
Some feel that these types of cycle calculators are “overkill”, but for those who are using the basal body temperature to prevent and plan a pregnancy, they have this information handy.
If you aren’t into this type of strict monitoring, a simple calculator like the one provided here can give you really good results and help you plan.
Using a Period Calculator
The first thing that the period calculator will ask you is the date of your last period. With so many apps available now, this should be information that is readily available.
And just remember, when calculating your period, you use the first day of your last period. This was the beginning of your cycle.
If you don’t know the exact first day, calculate back from the last day however long it lasted, and start tracking now. Especially if you are trying to get pregnant.
Some will use a menstruation calculator to figure out when to expect their periods and when to expect PMS. PMS is due to the change in hormones that cause periods and pregnancy.
When you are pregnant or during your period, these emotional and physical symptoms subside [2]. Some women can then plan to change their diet a few days before they expect PMS and help to alleviate some of the symptoms.
The next piece of information that you will be asked for is the average length of time between your periods. This is the length of the menstrual cycle. Of course, the human body does vary wildly here, and whilst some months there could be 30 days between your period, others it could be as low as 25.
However, you are only after an average here. Being as accurate as possible is important as this will affect the results that you are given which can have a profound effect on when the calculator tells you is the ideal time to try for a child.
Finally, you will be given your results. Based on the information you provided, it will calculate when your next period is anticipated and also your fertile period which is when you stand the best chance to get pregnant.

Understanding the Menstrual Cycle Properly
While you may already have a fair understanding of your own menstrual cycle, there are women who have cycle lengths that vary. Sometimes, your own cycle can be as short as 23 days on cycle and 28 or 30 days the next.
When a variation in menstrual cycle length occurs, it usually happens before you ovulate. This is referred to as the follicular phase which encompasses menstruation as well and ends when you ovulate [3]. A woman generally ovulates between days 12-16 of their cycle which is the start of the luteal phase [4].
There is a multitude of reasons as to why your period could be altered, be it stress or medications, even weight gain/loss or travel. Unless you think you are pregnant, it could be a myriad of reasons that have your period coming irregularly.
Understanding Your Next Menstrual Cycle and Fertilization
If you are trying to get pregnant you need to understand how the menstrual cycle works. The process starts when the thick lining of your womb starts to break up due to the decrease in estrogen and progesterone levels.
Without a sufficient amount of these hormones, your body will shed the lining and it will start to prepare for your next menstrual cycle.
However, if a sperm does make contact with and fertilizes the egg, it will close all pores to prevent more sperms from getting in there. The fertilized egg will stay in the fallopian tube for 3-4 days and then move to the uterus and attach to its wall, staying there for the long haul of pregnancy.
Your body will produce human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG) or pregnancy hormone right away (which can be seen within 6-8 days by a blood test and can take about 2 weeks if not longer to be seen in urine tests) [5].
The body will continue to produce the required estrogen and progesterone hormones so that the womb lining will not be shed and the placenta can grow mature enough that it can support the pregnancy.
Some Important Information Regarding the Calculator
The period calculator above also comes with a fertility calendar. You can navigate through different months by clicking on the NEXT 2 MONTHS and PREVIOUS 2 MONTHS links. This allows you to plan and prepare for your fertile and menstrual periods in the upcoming months.
What you do need to remember though is that the information isn’t 100% accurate as it is impossible to predict the human body.
Your fertile period gives you a good range in when to have intercourse to potentially get pregnant. You can learn more about the likelihood of conception in this article.
That being said, the menstrual calculator is still an extremely useful tool. It provides a simple way of knowing when to anticipate your next period and when is the best time to try for getting pregnant.
This could be a huge help for those with busy schedules to plan their days to start their family.

on 16th march i had my last menses but still my menses is not coming I am soo worried does it mean am pregnant
Hi , Seems to be pregnant only , why can’t you check your urine test
I got my period last March 25, I had sex last April 8 with condom on the last part of ejaculation. I supposed to have my period on April 22, but no periods until now. I experience cramping. Can I get pregnant? I am worried because, my eldest is just 2 years and 4 months old, while my youngest is just 8 months.
Don’t be worried my dear if you happen to be pregnant. If you are I wouldn’t encourage you to kill the baby (abort) still have her, I have been trying to have a baby but to no avail if u are fertile you should be glad you are. all you need to do is to use your contraceptive or if you wish to have 3 go ahead then after that tie your tubes I know times are hard but if God blessed you with 3 he will held you take care of them just ask Him
My last period was Mar.30 – Apr.3rd but I came on Again Apr.22. Between Apr. 8 and Apr. 19 I have had unprotected sex multiple times. Can I be pregnant with a negative test result. ( tested Apr.22)
But if you had your period at 22 April that means that you are not pregnant. And yes. You can be pregnant with negative test. In your case I doubt it.
I have a question, the first day of my last period was March 30th.. I have 7day long cycles & 21-23 days in between.. My period is 5days late. Test are negative. If I am pregnant did I conceive before or after that period. The cycle was normal, everything was normal. But now I’m worried something is wrong
So in average you have a 28-30 days long period? Or you have 21-23 ? I didn’t understand this. You can’t conceive, have period and continue to be pregnant. You may have the bleeding but not a period. There is a difference. If you had a normal period, you can only conceive after it. Only 5 days late doesn’t mean that you are pregnant. Maybe your cycle changed or something else. Tests doesn’t give any reliable results in an early phases of the pregnancy. I recommend that you ‘use’ a doctor to check it.
So I’m in my period but I had unprotected sex on a April 6, 2015 and ive been having a lot of pregnancy symptoms. Could I be pregnant?
HI Mariana
have you got your period yet for this month?
If you are having period ( you said that you are in your period) that means that you are not pregnant. The pregnancy symptoms that you are experiencing can be caused by elevated levels of the hormones or by your general health condition. It is not uncommon that the women with the strong PMS have cravings or even vomit. Joint and bone pains and bloated feeling is also part of the same hormonal disbalance.
HI
I had my period really late last month on March 28,2015. I am a 25 day cycle and my period lasts 3 days normally. I was expected my period on come on the 9th of March but I got it on the 28th of March. Now it is the 25th of April and I am still waiting for my period to come. Could I be pregnant since my period came late last month?
You are maybe having a hormonal disbalance or the transitional period jump. The second one usually occurs in a transitional time of the year when the health, blood and body in general are suffering an additional stress. It doesn’t need to be your case but it is not something uncommon or weird. You didn’t mention how old are you, did you have any health problems or did you suffer any infection or the cold lately. Some medications also can cause this or even a žn emotional stress. You can calculate your fertile days with your new data ( new period length) and see if you had an unprotected intercourse with your partner in those days.
my last menstrual cycle was 3/14 and i havent got it for this month.should i test? i have a 28 day cycle
You didn’t get your period for 49 days? Well, I recommend that you should either try now or you can wait a few days more and confirm pregnancy. If you can’t wait 7 more days I suggest a visit to your family doctor or the gynecologist. It is rare that a woman can go two cycles without being pregnant, but it happens. My cousin and niece had some sort of an emotional distress and their periods just stopped. Both of them were teens and periods came back after they started taking hormonal therapy, maybe after only a month.
I had my last period March 8th 2015 till the 11th of March then unprotected sex the 14-15 then the 22-24-26-28- all ejaculation inside. started bleeding light pink 29-30 then as of April 1st it was Brown streaks in my panties I had unprotected sex the 3rd of April and the 7th and 12th no period on April 20. can I be pregnant? all test are negative
I presume that you have a very short cycle. In the early phases of pregnancy test may all be negative. Still, I think it is way too early to be positive about the pregnancy. The light bleeding and it’s duration suggest that you may be pregnant after all. You should wait for another hormonal tests or visit your doctor.
My cycle started March 30 of last month but I had sex with my partner around April 7…I have been cramping amongst other things. My tubes are tied. Could I be pregnant?
No, no way. If your tubes are tied as you are saying they are, there is no way you could be pregnant. Also, you had sex out of your fertile period.
I had unprotected sex last march 14… and got my period on march 22 to 25. I was spotting on march 21.. then on april 8, i had an unprotected sex.. my period is due on april 16. I am 3 days delayed. Am i pregnant?
You can’t have ovulation and period one day apart. You can be pregnant if you had an unprotected sex only if your are in the fertile period, which in your case is rather odd.
I suggest that you check with your gynecologist about your ovulation and periods.
i had my period on the 20/03/2015 i have a regular period of 28 days i had sex on the 7/04/2015. period is supposed to come today (17/04/2015) but have not. could I be pregnant
You had a period a few days after the peak of your fertile period, but it is not said that you can’t be pregnant. One day daley is not something unusual but if it’s late till today still a possibility of the pregnancy is low.
Hello , I’m new to this .
i had a miscarriage on Feb 5 , 2015 . We aren’t trying to get pregnant.
We had an accident on march 29 , I did get my period on march 16-20
Is there a chance i can be pregnant again ? I took 2 test they both say negative .
I’m 4 days late now. i don’t want to stress or get excited
I’m sorry to hear that you had a miscarriage. The tests don’t need to be accurate because it is way too early to determine a possible pregnancy in that way. Your late period can be a result of a miscarriage. It usually takes more than a few months that a woman is able to get pregnant again after it. But, nothing is excluded as you had an accident during the fertile period.
My last period was on march 18th I usually have a normal 28 day cycle and my periods lasts 7 days everytime…now its april 17…am I pregnant?? I keep having a little cramp feeling every so often put no period…
Hi shay! I am in the same boat. I started my last period on March 18th as well. I have had some slight cramping as well as other pregnancy symptoms. I’m going to be testing tomorrow to see. have u tested yet? Good luck!
my last period was on may 02, 2015 and we had protected sex with my husband last may 25 he used condom and he also pulls out..i expected that my period will come on may 28, 2015 and until now its june 07, 2015 it doesn t come..i took the pregnancy test twice but its negative…
I have my last period on March 20 I have my fertile date last April 6 till 8 and I have intercourse April 15 i have a 32 days cycle.do I get pregnant then??
If you had an unprotected successful intercourse in your fertile days than there is a possibility for the pregnancy. If you have missed those days that possibility is minimal. In this case you were late 6 days so I don’t think you can be pregnant.
I had my period on the 15th of march. Then I had unprotected sex on the 27th of march at nite then I had more unprotected sex on the 31st of march that morning. Can I be pregnant or is it too soon to know. i need help and answers.
Yes, you might be pregnant if your cycle is an average 28 days and you also had the unprotected sex in the fertile window. But, it is a question if it was a successful intercourse or not. Till, now you should get your period. The pregnancy tests are inaccurate for the early stages of the pregnancy. I advise that you visit your doctor and determine if you are pregnant or not.
i have a reg 31 day cycle..Had period Feb 9 2015. Had sex during ovulation “window”.. Period should of started march 12th,nothing,Then period came 2 weeks late..possible pregnancy???
I didn’t understand what you wrote there completely, but if your period came the two weeks later than usual that means that you got your period and that you are NOT pregnant. Please give me more details and I will surely be back at you asap.
