Depo-Provera injections are a form of contraception that many women receive. The contraceptive injection contains the hormone progestin and is given once every three months to women to suppress the ovulation cycle and serve its contraceptive purposes. Depo injections are very effective in preventing pregnancy and are outright effective right after injection. Many women get their Depo shot the first five days of their normal menstrual period and the contraception is able to kick in immediately. There are many benefits and effects of Depo-Provera, but the most common side effect of the injection is a change in the woman’s menstrual

My second period Started *17 of May 2018*
Am I ovulating?
Am I back to normal?
Hello Ashley, based on the dates provided, yes, you seem to be back to normal.
Hi I got my Depo Feb 21st and am getting off of it as we are going to try and have our first child. I was on it in 2016 for a year , got off the depo for some time and was using the pill until February I got the shot again but now will be discontinuing birth control all together to get pregnant. I k ow my depo shot is due between May 16-21st how soon after should I be expecting to get a period and ovulating.
Hello Dannen, your period might return at least 3-4 weeks after.
Hi my name is chanel and I’ve been on depot for 2 years non stop but switched to the 2 months injection last year, it was my return date on the 2 April 2018 but I never went back, I then got my first period on the 4 May 2018 and I’ve been on my period ever since now for almost 2weeks now… My period is brown, then it would be light red and then very red… It would stop for half of the day then come out again… Could it be because of my hormones due to me leaving the injection or is my menstrual cycle not normal, is it normal for me to have my period for almost 2weeks or should I see a doctor, pls help and thanks
Hello Chanel, no this is not normal. See your doctor about this.
Hi,I stopped taking the injection on March.on April I had my normal menstruation 7 days but in May I have been bleeding for 10 days now and still counting. Please is it normal?
Hello Jane, your period might be a bit irregular for a while since you just stopped using the injection.
Hello everyone, I have a question? I got my depo I believe at the end of Feb 2018, I’m supposed to go back for my second shot May 28th 2018, but I’m not going too. My husband and I are trying to conceive, do you know how long that could take with only getting one depo shot? I also had a Fallopian pregnancy and my tube burst so I had surgery early Feb… Could this play a factor in having problems having another baby? We really want one, the baby fever is real!
Hello Josie, your doctor would be the best as it relates to giving you pregnancy advice moving forward given your previous situation.
I’ve been on injection for about 1 year and 2 months, I last got my shot November 2017, then saw my first periods after the shot on 10th of March 2018, am curious I’ve been waiting.
Hi Presenter, curious about what? Waiting for your next period? Sometimes it take months for your period to get back to normal. Have you taken a pregnancy test?
Hi i got on drop feb 2nd of this year i only had one dose i was supposed to go back April 20th or May 4 and I’m not going back because i been having problems on it when should my period return so i can conceive cause i really want a baby.
Hi Brown, once you start ovulating you can get pregnant. Which means within the next month. Essentially you will get your period after you ovulate so you could get pregnant at any time. Good luck!
I had a fake period for 2 weeks and then May 4-6 I’ve been having this clear stuff from vagina hang and when i wipe. I had sex on the 5th and he came in me 2 times that day. Can i be ovulating.
Hi Brown, well I don’t really know what you mean by having a fake period for 2 weeks? If you just stopped Depo or just started it could be that your body is either getting used to the medication or used to not having it which can alter your period for a few months.
I am suppose to begin my period the 22th of April. I got my birth control on the 19th of April. The 21th of April me and my fiancee had unprotected sex, can we get pregnant?
Hi Rochelle, did you start new birth control, is that what you are saying? While having intercourse right before your period is generally “safe” for not getting pregnant, it all depends on your cycle. But that last week as long as you ovulate regularly is usually a time that you aren’t ovulating.
Been taking depo for almost 5 years starting November 2012, last shot was March 2017. I got my period March 27th 2018, lasted about 5 days and it was gone. Got another period on April 11th, 2018, lasted 3 full days, and it was gone. It’s April 15th and I just started another one.
The whole time I was on the depo I only had one period and I get the shot regularly like scheduled.

My question is, when will these normalize? Is there anything I can do to make them normalize besides birth control? Am I ovulating each time one of those random periods happen, and can I get pregnant even though they are so sporadic? I do want to get pregnant again, and I was wondering, would the periods normalize after the pregnancy?
Hi Miranda, in order to have a period you have to ovulate so you are even though they are sporadic. If you are trying to get pregnant, birth control isn’t the only way to regulate your period or help you ovulate more regularly, there are medications that a doctor can prescribe to help with that. I would recommend giving them a call. Good luck!
I have been on depo for 4 years and I didnt get my period at all during this time, my last injection was on the 1st december last year, I diddnt take my shot which was due in march because I want to have another baby..I spotted for 3 days the time I missed the shot and now its the 15th april and I have not seen my period or spotting atleast, I did a pregnancy test but it came out negative..when can I expect my period to go back to normal?
Hi Lucia, because you’ve been on Depo for an extended amount of time, it’s quite possible that it could take an extended amount of time to get your cycle back to regular intervals. Some it takes a year at least to get back to normal. Give it time at this point. Good luck!
Hi I’m in the same boat as this person. Been on the shot for four years but want to have another baby. My last shot was the beginning of feb 2018. Is there anything that can help speed up the process or help my body?😔
Hello Kelly, no, I would advise making this process as natural as possible.
I got my first Depo shot December 22nd and my period was supposed to come around the 28th and I missed my period and got it towards the 20th of January And got off on February 18 then I got my 2 nd period while on Depo March 13 and got off April 5th and I never went back to get my second shot because I refused because of the long periods now my period came back on April 11th 😩😩will someone please tell me what’s going on with my body and when will I have my normal 7 day cycle again
Hi Adrianna, Since you just stopped your Depo shot you will have to give it a few cycles, then you should be back to normal. Many of those who stop getting the shot or other forms of birth control stop because of the irregular periods. I would say a few cycles and you should be back to your normal cycle.
Hi I received 3 shots of the depo. I was suppose to go for the 4th shot March 12th and I did not. When should my period return to normal?
Hello Alex, your period should return in a few weeks.
I’ve Had My Last Shot In October 2016 I Took 8 Doses IF Im Not Mistaken I Got My First Menstrual Cycle In March and 2 Cycles In July Of 2017 Ever Since Than I’ve Had A Cycle Every Month Last 4-7 Days but They Come 27-34 Days I Don’t Know IF I’m Regular or Irregular and I Also Dont Know IF I’m Ovulating Because How Strange My Cycles Are

i stopped my depo on 27 feb, but my periods came immediately, am i ovulating
Hi Moreen, if you are getting your period you are generally ovulating.
Thing is about depo is if you were using it for a long time it takes longer to leave your system and if you were taking it for a minimal period of time it will leave your body sooner. I was on the shot for 3 months, only had one shot in November i was suppoze to go for another in January 19 but never went, I got my period…more like spotting around the 5th of March which lasted for 3 days like my normal period usually last. My boyfriend and I are pretty excited and hope that we concieve soon. He’s 32 and Im 22.
Good Luck Kaysi! And yes you are very right about the Depo taking a while to leave your system especially the longer you have been on it.
Hi. I had my last depo on the 15th of december 2017. And now its almost 3 months. When should i expect my menstruation. Im always having mild headache these past few days.
Hi Jobelle, how long were you on Depo for? Some say that it could be as many as 18 months for your body to get back to normal. It’s really person dependent and how it has affected you. Many however though report about 3-4 months after.
