There is a widespread problem that exists among many couples who are sexually active. It is that they are relying on what is considered the safe period of the month to engage in sexual activities without taking any precaution.
The odds of a woman getting pregnant after having sex right after her period is low, but it could actually happen to anyone. If you need to know more, then read on as this article seeks to answer the question of can you get pregnant just after your period ends?
It is possible for you to conceive right after your period ends as this time you are just starting to enter your fertility window. However, your chances will be very low in reality.
If you are having sex without using any birth control method, you can get pregnant or conceive at any time in your menstrual cycle, including during or immediately after your period. It will all come down to how long your menstruation lasts and the actual length of your menstrual cycle.
Understanding the Menstrual Cycle
In case you are not aware of this, your menstrual cycle will start on day one of your period and last up to day one of your next period.
Your most fertile time will be at ovulation – happens when your ovaries release an egg – which normally takes place twelve to fourteen days before the start of the next period.
This period is called the fertile window, and it’s the time when you’re more likely to conceive.
For a typical cycle that takes place every twenty-eight to thirty days, this fertility window is normally between day eleven and twenty-one.
It is important to point out that the sperm can survive inside the body sometimes for as much as seven days after a woman has sex.
You will be approaching your fertile window if your period last for five to seven days and you engage in sex immediately after.
This means you could get pregnant very soon after your period ends if you ovulate early, particularly if your menstrual cycle is naturally short.
If you have a short cycle and long periods, it is still possible for your ovaries to release an egg very quickly after your period ends. This egg can get fertilized as normal, and pregnancy occurs if and when that happens.
Of course, you should also remember that your chances of getting pregnant immediately after your period will increase each day after the bleeding stops.
If you have been trying to conceive desperately, then this will be a good time to have sex to increase your chances.
More Information about Your Chances of Conceiving
In addition to the above, you can get pregnant or conceive if your period has never come before, throughout your first period, or immediately after having sex for the first time.
It is also quite possible for you to become pregnant throughout the alleged safe period of the month even when your partner withdraws his penis before ejaculating.
Semen is normally released during sex, including the precum one, so any form of sex without protection could result in pregnancy.
There are also rare instances when women end up pregnant even though they did not have penetrative sex with their partner.
The sperm can be very resilient, lasting up to several days following ejaculation. This means that pregnancy is a definite possibility if either one of you has sperm on your hands or any other part of your body, and it comes in contact with your vagina.
If you are looking to conceive or get pregnant, one of the best ways to increase your chances is to invest in an ovulation testing kit.
There are many different types available today, ranging from the simple strips which test the urine to the digital computers which monitor things monthly.
It is often more difficult for women to detect ovulation without these tests.
Another, less accurate method of detecting ovulation is to measure basal body temperature (BBT). It is a widely used way to detect ovulation due to ease of the test.
In this method, women need to measure body temperature each day in the morning before starting any kind of activity. Ovulation is marked by 0.5-1.0° F rise in the BBT.
It is worth knowing that BBT test is less accurate than ovulation testing kits, and may fail to detect ovulation in some cases.
Bottom Line
There is really no safe period of the month to engage in sexual activities without using contraception and avoid getting pregnant. You could even conceive if you have sex during your period.
However, you will be more fertile at certain times during your menstrual cycle, and this is the period when you are more likely to conceive. At times, ovulation can occur within a few days after your period ends.
In addition, sperm could fertilize an egg three days or seventy-two hours after ejaculation. Aside from the chances of becoming pregnant, you also have the risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease, such as genital warts, chlamydia, or HIV/AIDs, so you should use contraception at all times when having sex.
If not, abstinence is the only sure way to avoid unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. You can talk to your medical doctor about the different contraception methods available to you.

Im Sando, started my period on 15 febr -18 febr 2018. on 21 febr had unprotected sex twice. should i be pregnant
HI Sando, Based on a 28 day cycle you were ovulating from the 25th of February to the 1st of March. While you could be, it’s outside the window of your fertile period.
Hi, I am Loise. My period started on 3rd of feb and ended on the 7th of feb. From there I have been hving sex until today. Can i get pregnant?
Hi Loise, Your fertile period was from the 13th through the 17th, so if you have been having sex since your period ended through now, you most certainly could be pregnant. Good luck!
Hello. So I had my period last feb 16 which lasted 3-4 days and I recently had unprotected sex with my boyfriend on feb 23rd which is today. What are the chances of getting pregnant? My cycle usually takes 33 days.
Hi Elle, your most fertile period is from March 3rd through the 7th. Most likely you are outside of the range for you to get pregnant.
So my period came 2/17 I bleed for 3/4 days than I had sex the 3rd or 4th day do u think I will be expecting next month 🤗🤗 .
Hi AllYours90, based on the information you most likely would not be if you function on a 28 day cycle. It looks as though your fertile period is from the 27th through the 3rd of March. So if you are planning on getting pregnant, I would recommend getting busy sometime in the next few days. Good luck!
Hi
I had my period 2/14/18 – 2/18/18. I had sex with my boyfriend Monday the 19th. I am on birth control and take my pills around the same time every day. What are the chances I could be pregnant?
I am very stressed about this please respond, thank you!!
Hi Krystine, I responded above. Less than 1% with the pill taken correctly.
Hi Kristine, if you are using birth control and correctly as you say, your chances of getting pregnant are less than 1%.
hi. my last period started on feb 16 till feb 18. i had sex with my husband on feb 19 (the after my period) we use withrawal method and as i remember feb 14 we had sex too but not withdrawal. what is the possibility to get pregnant by this
Hi Ana, generally right before and right after your period are the worry free times when you aren’t ovulating. If you are not trying to get pregnant, I would recommend a regular method of birth control.
Hi
I started with my periods on the 15 January and finishing on the 20th and I met with my boyfriend on 21 we do unprotected sex. Is there A possibility of me getting pregnant?
Thank you in advance
Hi, Your fertile period was from the 25th through the 29th of January based on a 28 day cycle. WHile you were outside of the fertile period and you generally won’t get pregnant, if you haven’t gotten your period by March 1st I would recommend taking a pregnancy test as your period is due (based on again a 28 day cycle) the 22nd of February, so yesterday as of this post.
Hi my name is Kayla my period started on Feb 14-18 and during my period my boyfriend would cum on his hands & fingers and put the cum inside & on my vagina. Is there any chance I’m pregnant ?
Hi Kaylaa, generally during your period you aren’t ovulating. That being said most likely you aren’t going to get pregnant this way. However, if you aren’t trying to get pregnant I would highly recommend a regular form of birth control.
Hi. I have my period last January 21-24. And on the 25th I have unprotected sex with my bf. And now, I’m 4 days late for my period this Feb. But I have back pains and itchy nipples just a regular period symptoms. And I have this brownish spots. Is there a chance that I’m pregnant already or my period is just delayed?
HI Erika, Generally your most fertile period would have been the 31st of January to the 4th of February, however it’s always possible that you ovulated sooner or later. I would give it until you are 7 days late and then take a pregnancy test.
My first day of period started February 12th and lasted February 18th. I’ve had sex with him today (February 20th) and it is my first time having sex with someone. I’m experiencing bleeding because I know it’s because of hymen breaking. So, I want to know if it’s possible to get pregnant after period? And when will my next period should come next month? Would it be March 12th to March 18th or depends? I’m having an irregular period where usually my menstruation lasts 4-6 days and I was surprised that I had a normal period this month which lasted a week. Help would be appreciated! Thanks.
Hi Rose, It’s possible to get pregnant, however your fertile period looks to be the 22nd to the 26th so it’s outside of that range, however if you are saying that you have irregular cycles, it could alter a bit and it could increase your chances of getting pregnant. Based on a 28 day cycle your next period would be as you calculated, March 12th through the 18th. If you aren’t trying to get pregnant I would recommend some form of regular birth control.
Hi I had my period feb 5th to the 10th my period are normally 5 days long. Me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex Feb 12th-18th what are my chances of becoming pregnant?
HI Crystal, Your fertile period would have been the 15th through the 19th of February based on a 28 day cycle. You could definitely become pregnant if you were having unprotected sex during that time.
When do you think is the best time to take a test ? I am anixious 🙂 just don’t no the earliest you can receive a positive if so
Hi Crystal, The earliest based on the boxes, say that you can test 5 days before your missed period. However it’s recommended to wait until at least after your period is late, so after the 5th of March if you are super anxious about it and can’t wait. You just don’t want to test too early. (I personally got a positive about 4 days before my period). Trust me, taking multiple tests can be anxiety inducing so I would wait at least until the 5th if you don’t want to go through that. Good Luck!
Hi my name is Sonia, have been waiting for my period for 7 months, was thinking I was pregnant but not. Finally had my period on the 12/2/2018 finished on the 17/2/2018 had sex with my husband on the 18th. What possibility do I have of getting pregnant? thanks
Hi Sonia, According to the calculator, and based on a 28 day cycle, your fertile period would be from the 22nd through the 26th. So you are outside of the fertile period. That being said with your period being that irregular, you might not know when you are ovulating. I would recommend getting some ovulation tests to determine when your re ovulating if you are trying to get pregnant, or making an appointment with your doctor to see what they can help you with.
I finished my period on 31 January and met with my partner on 7,8, 10 and 17 February can i be pregnant
Hi I had my last period feb 8,9,10 and it was very light flow. And last February 14th I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend is there any possibilities for me to get pregnant. And since yesterday I had itchy areolas and shooting pains in my breast and Itchy belly. thanks~
Hi Chloe, According to the calculator found here your most fertile period would be from the 18th through the 22nd. So you should be outside the window of fertility. Generally speaking unless you are extremely sensitive, you woulnd’t feel most symptoms until closer to when your period was going to be hit.
Hi
My last period started on the 1st of feb, ended on 5th feb,I had unprotected sex on the 10th of February, pls what’s the probability that am pregnant?
Hi Chigo, Based on a 28 day cycle, your most fertile period is from the 11th to the 15th of February. WHile you are outside of the period of most fertile, sperm can live for an extended period of time, so it’s still possible.
I am purity.. I started my period on Feb 14 through Feb 17 it just ending. I had sex with my partner and he came on me, pls is there any chance that i will be pregnant.
Hi Purity, Your most fertile period, according to the calculator found at Menstural Cycle Calculator Is the 18th through the 22nd. So if he came in you, you could potentially become pregnant. If he came on you, it’s still possible considering preejaculation still has sperm in it but generally less likely (but still possible). The only way you will know for sure is if you miss your next period which is anticipated May 8th based on a 22 day cycle.
