Menstrual Cycle After Abortion
I had an abortion three weeks back on a Sunday and had my check up in two weeks, the doctor ran an ultrasound and a urine test which both were negative and now I’m suddenly approaching the fourth week after my abortion and my breast feels full and I am having a bloating sensation. Can something be wrong?
Your body may be preparing for your next period. The symptoms may be related to PMS (premenstrual syndrome).
Hello , im 19 years old i had a medical abortion at 7 weeks on april 4th , ive had not have my period yet even thought the doctor who did my abortion told me it should come in two weeks, i had sex unprotected with my boyfriend but did not finish inside me and then later with used condoms . ive had some brown spotting recently but thats it, i have a hard life and im often under a lot of stress and depression and now more worried about my period that has not yet come ive havent had any blood tests yet and im going to set a date with my OBYGN soon to check me up , could i be pregnant again ? How can i know ? And if not when can i expect my period ? Im also a stoner and i smoke weed frecuently and ive read that sometimes that affects your menstrual cycle like stress and depression does. Please help
Hello Arianne, Normally period may return within 6-8 weeks of abortion. Also since you a more having stress and depression and you also smoke, your periods may be more irregular. You can be assured by your gynecologist. All the best !
Thanks for answering, its nice for someone to actually take the time to read about these kinds of problems and help, my date with my gyno is on June 9. Hopefully, she’ll let me know more about my condition and I still have not gotten my period. The thing I fear the most about getting pregnant again is getting pregnant symptoms like morning sickness because I had it really bad and I even lost weight because of it. I even thought that’s a good thing, lol. It messed me up and having to get a second abortion worries me a lot because I don’t know how it will affect me in a future like ten years – 15 from now when I do want to have a baby will I be able to? And would the baby be healthy? I Just want to know how much damage I will receive and on my abortion it hurt like hell during the suction part. I felt it clearly and maybe it was cause I wasn’t properly anesthetized in the clinic I went to – i don’t know.
You can have normal children when you’re ready to conceive again after an abortion. Once the procedure is properly done, you should be able to have more children whenever you think the time is right.
I did an abortion in March and now it’s April. I did not go to my periods. Is there any chance that the abortion was not successful?
Take a pregnancy test. Note that generally hCG levels will remain high up to 6 weeks after abortion or miscarriage. It may be necessary to re-test a few times after an abortion to ensure that the pregnancy has been terminated.
I had an abortion on the 28 April 2016. I had stomach cramp for about 9days. On the 9th day, I saw clotted blood coming out from my private parts. Since then I have stopped bleeding. The second day which was the 10th day after the abortion I did a scan to check if the pregnancy was still there…the scan gave an answer…a fairly bulky uterus and that I should go for blood serum test…which I did and gave me a positive answer. And I am yet to see my period this is the 18th day after the abortion.
I had a surgical abortion on the 15th April I was 10 weeks pregnant. I didn’t bleed until four days after and it was only light. This went on for two weeks before it stopped completely. I started to bleed on the 10th of May and it’s very heavy with tissue and cramping even on day four. It’s so heavy. Is this my first period or is it still the aftermath of the abortion?
I had an abortion in March by pills with doctor’s consultant, I saw my period on 12 April, since then no period this month. We had sex but with precautions. I’m scared, please help with a quick reply.
Don’t worry about your delayed period – in most instances, a menstrual cycle is expected within 4 to 8 weeks after an abortion.
Hi, l had an abortion on Tuesday there was blood the whole day and the next it stopped. On Wednesday the blood was coming out again just like normal menses. Can this be a problem??
The effects of an abortion include bleeding, cramps or a vaginal discharge. What you’re experiencing is normal. If however, you develop a fever then you should consult your doctor.
I had a procedure March 22nd 2016 and saw my Period April 22nd. I had intercourse 25th-27th but with protection and I’m expected to see my next period may 19th I think may 4th was the ovulation day but a weird thing happened, I bled for 3 days and it stopped. I did a urine pregnancy test may 14th and it showed negative and may 19th is my expected period but till now I haven’t seen my period.
Hi, I found out I was 9 weeks pregnant, I had a medical abortion in April and I started to bleed for about 3 days and then stopped. I experienced, swollen breasts for some time, then my breast started to leak white substance for one day then stop. What does that mean? And also my period has not come since then and now it’s May, so I am wondering if it is safe to have protected sex now?
The white substance from your breast is colostrum, the first milk your breasts produce during pregnancy. It is normal for your breast to leak colostrum after an abortion. It will take another 4 to 8 weeks before your period returns. Also, it is very important that you give yourself time to heal both emotionally and physically before you try to conceive again. Physical recovery after a miscarriage is quick and takes only a few days. After about a month, your body will be working normally and your menstrual cycles will begin once again. It is possible to become pregnant during your first menstrual cycle after your miscarriage or abortion.
Hi, I took abortion pills of the 17th of May 2016. I had my first period 24th April. Before then my periods weren’t accompanied with cramps but this time it was. I had unprotected sex which the condom broke 2 days after the end of my period (29th April) and took postinor 2 after about 28 hrs due to the uncertainty. As of two days ago, I started experiencing stomach cramps and tender but not darkened nipples. I took a pregnancy test on the 10th and it was negative. But I’m still having these pregnancy-like symptoms. Could I be pregnant again or its normal?
Hi Nana, Those pregnancy like symptoms could also be because of abportion pills you took. If you continue to feel like that, take a pregnancy test again or consult a doctor.
Hi,
I had an abortion on April 16th, I was only 9 weeks, had my normal bleeding it stopped for just a few days, but now I am having period symptoms (cramps, bloating, lower back pain) and occasional discharge that is brownish, like right before you start or end your period. Is all of this normal? I am 32 with 4 kids. before I had my abortion my period would come between the 10th and 15th of the month.
Yes, it is normal for a cycle to change after an abortion. Continue to monitor the changes in your body and be on the alert for other issues.
I also have a similar issue. I aborted at two weeks. I’ve had my first period since then and it preceded with cramps which is unusual. It ended on 24th April. Now I think I’m approaching my menses and I have brown discharge accompanied with tender breasts and cramps. I had sex 2 days after my 4 day menses and took *Postinor 2 28 hrs later. Could I be pregnant? Is it normal?
I had an abortion, blessed for a week and had sex after two weeks and some days after the abortion but my boyfriend didn’t release into me…..it pass a month since I had the abortion but I have not had my menses…but I feel some light abdominal pain for some days now…please what is wrong??
Hello Afya, Hope this finds you in good health. It is normal of not having periods for 6-8 weeks after abortion. The primary reason for the delayed first period after abortion is that the body still has some pregnancy hormones and feels their effects for several weeks after abortion. Having pain, feeling dizzy, swollen breasts are some of the symptoms that are normal during this time. Infact, during your first period also you could feel the same. So nothing is wrong and even if you still feel confused consult a doctor for a peace of mind.
Had a pill abortion March 12. Bled out until March 27 or maybe April 1, but since then nothing. Took three pregnancy test they are all negative. Can anyone help?
Don’t worry about your delayed period – in most instances, a menstrual cycle is expected within 4 to 8 weeks after an abortion. If you’ve tested negative it means the pregnancy was terminated.
I had an abortion and for about five weeks now I’ve not had my period and I’ve had sex again with my boyfriend but he didn’t release in me. I’m scared please help me. Thanks

Then 3 wks after that, I witnessed another bleeding which was heavy and it lasted for 4 days. Presently I am witnessing another bleeding. Please is this? Because I’m scared already.
The effects of an abortion include bleeding, cramps or a vaginal discharge. If these symptoms are excessive and you have a high fever then you must see a doctor. It’s best to consult your doctor since this bleeding is ongoing.

I had an abortion on 4th April nd it lasted for a week.. I’m yet to see my menses… Is it normal.. I had a scan too.. It mentioned tiny follicles are still available.. Is that a reason of not getting my menses?
Hello, after abortion, the first period usually comes after 4-8 weeks and that’s completely normal. So don’t worry about it. It happens because the body needs some time to get adjusted to the new situation.
Tip- It is advised to not have sex and not even use tampons for the first month after abortion, to make sure that no infection takes place. So please follow that.
