Did you know that antibiotics could affect the menstrual cycle? Indeed, most of them can have an effect on menstrual periods, with some reporting delays. Find out more about the connections between antibiotics and the menstrual cycle below. Your Regular Cycle During the first 14 days of a 28-day menstrual cycle, your follicle will start to grow and kick-start the initial production of additional estrogen. It will start to make the endometrium lining thicker. When ovulation commences, the estrogen hormone will be joined by the progesterone hormone from the corpus luteum to make the endometrium mature and thicker. How Antibiotics
Antibiotics and menstrual cycle
Hello
I started seeing my period July 29 to 3rd August and started taking antibiotics pills August 26th because of UTI. I’ve got abdominal pain (period pain) since last week and I haven’t seen my period still
Went on a pregnancy test twice and it’s both negative and I’ve got vaginal dryness
Hi Maryam, it could be from the antibiotics which do affect periods. They tend to delay periods for a lot of women. If you are done with your cycle of medications and are still getting negative pregnancy tests then just wait for your period and you will get it.
My last time periods was on 19 July …on 27 I went through a surgery..that’s why I took so many antibiotics…still I didn’t get periods…what’s the reason???
Hi Sandy, antibiotics and stress on the body are two things that can affect your period. I would give it some time and you should see your cycle return.
I am treating staph and candida albican I was suppose to see my period on the 24 of this month but up till now I have been feeling cramps but yet nutin these are the names of the drugs am using levoflocaxin and ciprogem do u think I will still see my period
Hi there, when you take antibiotics it can affect your cycle, the longer you take them, the more it can affect them. I would give it some time as you are only a day late at this point.
Hello, I started taking ciprofloxacin 750 mg due to having a UTI. I started my course 2 days before i started my period. I started my period 1 day earlier than expected, the first day was very bright red and light flow, the second day was normal but not as heavy as usual and now the third day I am only getting brown spotting/discharge. I have been trying to get pregnant with my 2nd child but i wanted to know if ciprofloxacin can effect my period like this?
Hi Ska, yes it can affect your period like that. I would consider this your period and take that into account when you are determining your fertile period.
I took ampiclox after sex for prevention and ever since haven’t seen my period yet, and I did pt which turned out negative, I haven’t seen my period for 3months now….please wah can I do?
Hi Nafisat, you took it for prevention? Generally antibiotics are for actually fighting an infection and aren’t used in the prevention of an infection. With that being said it can delay your period for a bit but normally not three months. I would recommend making an appointment with your doctor to see what is actually going on .
Hi would really appreciate some help! Been taking antibiotics for 10 days due to ear infection. Finished the course 5 days ago. My ovulation (I take tests kit clearblue) is late by 5 days. I have PMS symptoms my boobs super tender, cramps. My husband 0 sperm count and taking HCG, started a week ago. We are trying for pregnancy. Why do my boobs hurt and cramping but no sign of ovulation or period! We didn’t have sex since last period as husband was away on business trips!
Hi Sara, antibiotics can affect your cycle by having you ovulate and have your period later than usual. I would still keep track of your ovulation and period when it does come. I’d say potentially pregnancy except that you stated you haven’t had sex since your last cycle. Good luck.
Hi I was on antibiotics last week for 5 days after I finished my treatment Ive got period pain but not my period. 4 days after my treatment I went back to the doctor because I still wasn’t feeling better and she put me on a seconded cycle of antibiotics which I’m currently on but I still feel some simtoms of my period to start but nothing is happening I can not be pregnant because I am still a virgin.
Daisy
Hi Kayla, if you are still a virgin then you have nothing to worry about in that area. As for the antibiotics and your period, it can and most likely will be delayed. Once you are done with the medications your body will take some time to regulate itself again.
I was on a week’s course of antibiotics for H-Pylori and it delayed my period during the duration of taking them. My period started the day after I finished my course. I did drink a glass of soy milk to help boost my estrogen levels up again.
Hello, I started my period June 16 and it ended June 21. I used cefuroxime tablet for 3 days from July 21. I have not seen my period since June, I have done pregnancy test four times and they were negative. Pls what could be the cause, could the drug have made me miss my period
Hi Toyin, yes the antibiotics can delay your period. However at two months that is a bit of time. I would recommend an appointment with your doctor to ensure nothing else is going on.
I was put on 5 days of amoxicillin 13th july. Last period was 3rd July. I am now 12 days late for my period. Pregnancy test is showing as negative however i have had brown discharge for 4 days last week then back to nothing for last 3 days, i do feel nauseas for the last 3 days. Would the amoxicillin delay a period for this long like this?
hi Jody, it can affect your period for that long. However you might consider the brown discharge your period as well. While it does affect your period it can affect it in a few different ways. I would give it some time especially if the tests are showing negative.
Please I had reactions on my body so I started taking antibiotics for four day now and my period was due to come on the 10th of August and today is 12th no sign of it yet. But I noticed that I have being passing out bass just like when am seeing my period. what could be the cause?
Hi Happiness, antibiotics can affect your body and delay your period. So it’s quite possible that your period is just late, and considering it’s only 2 days late I wouldn’t worry. However, if there is a chance that you could be pregnant, I would take a pregnancy test.
No period for 9 months took doxycyclinethen s week later very heavy period! Totally confused would appreciate your comments on this please. Marcella
Hi Marcella, so you haven’t had a period in 9 months? Is irregularity normal for you? If not than it could have been the affects of your body taking antibiotics, however I would have wondered why you didn’t have your period for that long. If you are concerned, discuss it and the reasons for not getting your period for that long, unless you are one birth control which is keeping your periods at bay. It that is the case then the antibiotics can and will affect how your hormones are working in your body which can cause the heavier, and existent period.
I started my period June 16 and it ended June 21 and on July 21 I started using cefuroxime tablet for three days. I have not seen my period since June. Could something be wrong, I tested negative for pregnancy. I did the test four times
Hi Toyin, it is an antibiotic which can affect your cycle, but that is a short time to be using antibiotics. Generally we hear more of a 10 day course, however it can still affect your period. Considering the pregnancy test is normal, it should be fine that you have nothing to worry about.
I’ve been taking antibiotics for H pylori and have had a delayed period of 5 days now. I am going to a. Festival in a few weeks and suffer from really heavy and extremely painful periods. My antibiotic course finishes tomorrow (11) days before the Festival. Do you think that my period will come before then? Or do you think that it will skip it in general this month?
Hi Tina, You will generally still get your period. When however is the question. Every body is different when it comes to how antibiotics affect it. So you could be a week late or more than that. Unfortunately I couldn’t tell you if you will be period free during the festival, however I will keep my hopes up for you.
I saw my last period on June 14 and I was supposed too see d nex one in July 11 I took Beecham ampliclox frequently before my next period which was supposed to be July 11 can it affect my delay in period and I have been having frequent breast pain and nipple itching and green/yellowish discharge and odor in my vagina.
HI Michelle, if you are having green/yellow discharge I would see your doctor again, especially if this still ongoing. it seems like you still have some sort of an infection honestly.
Hello .
I started seeing my period on July 31 and started talking Erythromycin and Ampiclox the same day. And from that day my period stopped coming. What do you think is going on with me?
Hi Ramona, antibiotics can affect your period. However we mostly discuss periods being late due to antibiotics because your body has already ovulation and passed the egg. At this point I would consider that your period and monitor the next one.
