Did you know that antibiotics could affect the menstrual cycle? Indeed, most of them can have an effect on menstrual periods, with some reporting delays. Find out more about the connections between antibiotics and the menstrual cycle below. Your Regular Cycle During the first 14 days of a 28-day menstrual cycle, your follicle will start to grow and kick-start the initial production of additional estrogen. It will start to make the endometrium lining thicker. When ovulation commences, the estrogen hormone will be joined by the progesterone hormone from the corpus luteum to make the endometrium mature and thicker. How Antibiotics
Antibiotics and menstrual cycle
Hi I got amoxicillin 875MG. Usually my period come around this time but all I got is the period pain without any bleeding. Also it seems that I got yeast infection with soft frequent bidmovement. Now I have a little swelling in a side of my private area where the pee comes from.
Is that all normal and related to the antibiotic that just finished last week?
Hi Elham, Antibiotics have a tendency to affect your period and when it starts as well as be the cause of yeast infections. While you could take an over the counter relief for the yeast infection, I would recommend scheduling an appointment at the doctor regarding the swelling. Also if there is any possibility that you could be pregnant (unprotected sex while taking the medications), I would grab a pregnancy test and wait until 7 days after your scheduled period due date if you don’t get it.
Hi … I took amoxicillin 625mg on 25-31/1/18. During that time, I was period. My regular menstrual cycle is 28 days. I’m expecting my period this week but it’s late for 3 days already. If I’m pregnant, will the amoxicillin affects the baby? Quite worry…
Hi Anna, I hope to clear your mind. Amoxicillin is a class B drug, which means that it’s safe to take during pregnancy with low risk to a fetus if you are indeed pregnant. And if you are already late , give it a few more days and take a test, because you could also be late because of the amoxicillin as well. Good luck!
please what kind of drug can be taken in correction to this??I mean antibiotics causing menstrual delay. thanks.
Hi Princess. There really is nothing you can take. You can add probiotics into your diet to help counteract the good bacteria being removed, but otherwise you have to wait until the round of antibiotics are done and let your body recuperate.
Hi, I was on clidamyin for a week I ended it around Jan 24th. My period was supposed to start the second, I had sex the day before and I am now 7 days late….. cld I be pregnant?
Hello Jen, the antibiotic might be responsible for the delay in your period.
So I believe it could be an imbalance in my body and hormones but I figured it was worth an ask…
I took 300mg Clindamycin every 6 hours for 10 days for an ear infection. I started antibiotics on January 18th. I take lo-loestrin as my form of bc pill. When I started antibiotics it was a few days before I should have started my period. Well in the last days of my antibiotic I started to spot and bleed lightly as normal but not it is almost a month later and I’m still bleeding. I’m not experiencing bad cramps but I have been having blood clots and flow comes and goes. I was wondering if this could be due to the fact I may still have the antibiotics in my system enough to cancel out my bc pill since it’s the lowest estrogen dose available?
Hi Jess, Are you saying you’ve been bleeding for a month now? If that’s the case I would make a call in to your doctor. On the other note, yes antibiotics will affect the reliability of birth control, nearly negating what they are supposed to do.
Yes I’ve been bleeding off and on for the past 3 weeks. Not a constant flow though most days. Some days I don’t bleed at all then the next I spot or have a heavier flow it has just varied. I do know that I was suppose to have had my period during the time I was starting antibiotics. I didn’t really bleed during that time though. I will give my OBGYN a call tomorrow though just to be safe. Thanks.
Hi there. Just very confused here. So me and my partner made love on january 19th. Sorry for TMI but it was the second time that day, (he peed before we started again and I did do him a favor as we carried on), he gave a few quick ones without protection (didnt even last a minute), and then he wore a condom before he was close to finishing so he didnt really ejaculate inside me.
Three days after that, I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with pharyngitis and gave me 20mg antibiotics to take twice a day and meds for my cough to take thrice a day along with the antibiotics for the course of seven days.
I am seven days late as of today, and I experienced my usual PMS symptoms. I had been in a good mood (always like this when im about to have my period), always wanting to eat, being lazy and wanting to lay down all day. I also had spotting about five days before I am due which was a bit unusual.
When it was my first day to be late, I started getting worried and stressed if I was pregnant. All i’m having is discharge that is watery on the first to fifth day and is now stretchy at the seventh. I am feeling a bit lightheaded but I dont constantly feel like throwing up. I’m experiencing flatulence and burping. I dont have sensitivity over food, I can still eat those that I like. My breasts don’t feel tender at all. I poop regularly although it is a bit loose.
I am experiencing mild cramping in my lower abdomen but no period yet. I’m about to take a PT, am just waiting so i dont get a false negative. Can I hear an opinion about my case? I’m really stressed out and worried which I know, might delay my period even more.
Hello Raine, the delayed period is more than likely as a result of the antibiotics, however you can still take a pregnancy test to see if you might also be pregnant.
Hello. I took heavy antibiotics (can’t remember the name) and Prednisone for a sinus infection. I finished the antibiotics 2 days before my period was about to start. I am currently 7 days late and counting. Could this be the cause?
Hello Lacey, yes the antibiotics could be responsible for delaying your period.
hi, my period is due on the 5th but I can’t see it, I took bicham ampiclux after sex with my bf could it be the cause of the delay or am I pregnant
Hi,I am Dorcas.I actually started taking antibiotic and steroids two weeks ago for a throat infection and I am already 2 days late for my menstrual cycle, what could be the cause please?
Hi there Dorcas, this delay in your period is more than likely as a result of the antibiotics.
Hi, I took azithromycin (zithromax) 1ooog 2 days days before my regular period and my period was delayed for 3 days before it began . It slightly paused after a week and continued with heavy flow and blood clots sometimes. In total my period has been on for 17 days now. Can the antibiotic be the reason for this ? What can I do to stop the flow ?
Hello Olivia, read below to see how antibiotics affect the menstrual cycle.

Hi, I had my wisdom tooth removal 2-3 weeks ago and I’ve been taking 3 kinds of medicines (Amoxicyllin 500 mg, mefenamic acid 500 mg and tranexamoc acid 500 mg). I took those medicines for about 2 weeks also. And now I’m 4 days late. But we had unprotected sex this Jan 23 but he didn’t ejaculated inside me. And now, im panicking if it’s really because of the medications or it is some kind of matter. I dont wanna get pregnant now.
Hi Jade,
It’s quite possible that you could be pregnant, however, with taking a round of antibiotics it is also possible that you’re period is naturally late because of how the antibiotics affect your body. If you are concerned I would get a pregnancy test and take that.
Hello, I have been taking antibiotics for two days for a tooth infection. My period finish last week and this morning it started again, heavy flow. I have not taken antibiotics for about 25 years. Can the side effects be so severe?
Hi Nicola,
When discussing antibiotics, generally they cause the period to be later than general due to affecting estrogen in the body. If you are concerned about getting your period early a second time I would contact your doctor.
Hi my name is Talisha i have been taking amoxillin for five days and i realised that my period which lasts 5 days is still on me for the 6th day can the pills be the cause of this?
Hello Talisha, there might be a slight possibility that this is the case.
From the 12th day of my last flow, I started a 10-day erythromycin 500mg therapy. It’s day 31 already (i have 28 days cycle) and am yet to see another flow.
Is it normal?
Hi Joyce,
Yes it is normal. Because antibiotics affect hormones in the body, especially estrogen, it can affect when your next period will show up. However, that being said, if you have had unprotected sex during that time frame, you’ll want to take a pregnancy test just to be sure.
I am 4 days late on my period I’ve been taking penicillin for a toothache infection. Could the penicillin be throwing my period off or could I be pregnant. Been having really bad headaches very fatigued and lower back and cramps .
Hello Rosealyn, the pencillin might be the reason for this.
Hi i am currenty talking the medicine clidamycin 150mg.
I had sex 15days ago and im 7 days late on period i stopped talking them yesterday after 5days off taking them. Will it delay my period or am i pregnant am not getting a positive test but could be too early right?
Hi there Lavarna, this medication might be the reason for your delayed period.
Last week I was taking Macrobid for a UTI. On Sunday I took my last pill and started spotting off and on. I have no pain, itch, or foul oder. It isn’t heavy, but I do wear a panty liner. Is this a side effect from the antibiotics?
Hello Chanell, this might all be related to the infection and the taking of the antibiotics.
I actually dewormed and do take tetracycline for a while now and my period is usually 4 days earlier than the previous one. But this time around I haven’t seen it yet. I only had sex within two weeks immediately after my last period any chance I’m pregnant?
Hi Nicky, Tetracycline which is an antibiotic might be responsible for the delay in your period.
