Every woman has a different menstrual flow, but it generally occurs between the twenty-eighth and the thirty-fourth day of the monthly cycle. A menstrual flow can last for about four days on average. A period is considered lengthy if it lasts more than seven days.

Most women experience pain and nausea during period. However, it is important to get medical care if your menstrual pain is severe with vomiting or sharp and stabbing ache.

Nausea during Menstrual Cycle

The following are some of the common causes of nausea during the period:

Dysmenorrhea: Also known as painful menstruation. This is a common problem that is affecting many women monthly. Its symptoms include vomiting, nausea, headache as well as abdominal cramping.

Hormonal changes: In some situations, hormonal imbalance can cause women to experience nausea during the period.

If your estrogen levels are very high or low or they are increasing and decreasing significantly in one or two days, the brain centers which control digestion and balance can go up or slow down dramatically and make you feel sick.

This fluctuation in estrogen and various other hormone levels can cause nausea [1], bloating, mood changes and more.

Anemia and multivitamins: If you are prone to anemia and you are taking multivitamins or any other nutritional supplement, you might experience nausea during your periods as well. Anemia occurs when your blood has lower levels of red blood cells.

However, it might be hard for your body to process things if you have an iron deficiency or is nearly deficient and you are taking large doses of the nutrient. Women who lack sufficient blood iron are generally deficient when they are losing blood during their periods.

It is usually important to take iron supplements during this period, but the nausea which accompanies the condition can become serious.

Endometriosis: This condition can cause you to experience many symptoms, including nausea during your menstrual period. Your doctor can use laparoscopy to diagnose the condition. If it’s present, endometrial implants will be seen on or around your ovaries or fallopian tubes.

In most cases when women are experiencing nausea during menstrual cycle, they might get relief once the abdominal pain is controlled. You could control your menstrual pain and get relief from nausea if you are using over the counter medications to treat your period symptoms.
