Depo-Provera injections are a form of contraception that many women receive. The contraceptive injection contains the hormone progestin and is given once every three months to women to suppress the ovulation cycle and serve its contraceptive purposes. Depo injections are very effective in preventing pregnancy and are outright effective right after injection. Many women get their Depo shot the first five days of their normal menstrual period and the contraception is able to kick in immediately. There are many benefits and effects of Depo-Provera, but the most common side effect of the injection is a change in the woman’s menstrual
Menstrual Cycle after Depo Injections
I had my first shot in March and didn’t have a period until may- june non stop until i decided to not get my next shot due to long bleeding, after missing my shot my period stopped for 3 weeks now its back it been 3 days. Will i go back to having a long period after not getting my injection or is it possible my period is back regular ?
Hi Shanay, it’s only been three days since your period started? It could take a few cycles to go back to normal but it will generally go back to normal.
HI, I have been on the depo shot for 4 years. During the time I still received my cycle and it stayed on for about a month, that was how i determined when my upcoming shot was due. I decided not to get my last shot that was due in March of 2018 and my cycle came on May 14-June 30th. Is this my normal cycle, when will I begin to ovulate to become pregnant? I have also started taking Vitex 3 times a day to help regulate my cycle. we ave been trying ever since i stopped the depo but not luck as of yet, i am beginning to worry.
Hi, for some after they stop depo it takes months for them to ovulate regularly. I would give it some time, also maybe invest in ovulation tests that can help you determine when the best time to have sex is. If you aren’t having any luck in a few months I would recommend an appointment with your doctor but it is relatively normal when it comes to trying to get pregnant after depo. Good luck.
Hi ive been taking shots for how many years and ill stop last april 17 2018 and im afraid because i did not have a period untill now…
Hi Nancy, the longer you use depo, the longer it could take for your period to return to normal. It’s only bee 3 months it could take up to a year for some.

I just recently had my last depo shot in may and I’m due back to have my next one this month but I’m not going cause me and my husband want to try for another one. But yesterday that morning i wiped and there was blood like my period and today still the same it’s almost like spotting but there is never hardly blood on my pad. Is this normal after stopping the depo?
Hello Brittany, yes this is normal after stopping the depo provera shot.
I stopped my depo shot last march, in May 3 i have my first menstruation after stopping from depo, last june 1 is my second menstruation but now its july 8 and still i dont have my menstruation, i have breast tenderness feeling so i thought i will my mens but still i dont have it now, is it normal?
Hi Sharmaine, This is normal. Sometimes it take a few months for the body to get back into a normal rhythm. If you had unprotected sex though I would check for pregnancy.
hello , i took one depo shot and its been a month now ever since i stopped using it but i haven’t seen my periods yet and am worried because my husbands tells me, my fertility might not return again yet we badly need a child.
perhaps is there any possibility of making the drug leave ones body since they say , it takes some time
Hi Minah, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to make the drug leave your body sooner. It’s only been a month and I would give it at least 2-3 until you see your doctor to determine if you want to choose medications to help ovulation return.
Why do I bleed a little and then stop and then I bleed again it comes and goes . Since 6-5-18 I took my depo provera my period is abnormal.
Hi Evelyn, one of the biggest complaints with Depo is a drastic change in their periods, some bleeding for a while. If it’s something that bothers you and you don’t enjoy it and it affects your life, speak with your doctor and discuss other options in birth control.
Hello, I took one Depo shot and decided not to take another. I took my first shot Feb. 22nd and was due for the next May 17th. I bleed for the months of March and April where there was light and heavy bleeding but it stopped half way through April. In about a week July will be here…. About when should I be seeing my period?? Thanks in advance!
Hi Tammy, unfortunately without any dates I could tell you when you should expect your next period. If you know the first day of your last period, check out the calendar found here and it can let you know when to expect your next one.
Hello! I am Mide, have been on contraceptive shot for 10 Month. My shot expired on the 19th of June and I have sex today 30th of June. Can I be pregnant?
Hi Mide, depending on when your ovulation started again, it’s quite possible. A lot of women take a while to get back to a normal cycle so if you are trying to get pregnant you might need to take a few months before you see a regular period and not know when your ovulation is. So I would take it as it goes.
Hi! I had been in Depo injection for 3 years didn’t get my last shot in February, as we were thinking of conceiving. I never received my period while on the shot and I still have not had a sign of a period yet! I get night sweats often and all over the map emotions! When will my menstutal cycle come back? Are these symptoms telling me that hormones are trying to balance or other concerns?
Hello Emily, it is best to see your doctor about this.
I’m Agnes, I Ve been on Depo for 2 and a half year and have not had my period since. Pls will my period return immediately after stopping?
Hello Agnes, your period will return after stopping the injection. Not necessarily immediately after.
