There is a widespread problem that exists among many couples who are sexually active. It is that they are relying on what is considered the safe period of the month to engage in sexual activities without taking any precaution.
The odds of a woman getting pregnant after having sex right after her period is low, but it could actually happen to anyone. If you need to know more, then read on as this article seeks to answer the question of can you get pregnant just after your period ends?
It is possible for you to conceive right after your period ends as this time you are just starting to enter your fertility window. However, your chances will be very low in reality.
If you are having sex without using any birth control method, you can get pregnant or conceive at any time in your menstrual cycle, including during or immediately after your period. It will all come down to how long your menstruation lasts and the actual length of your menstrual cycle.
Understanding the Menstrual Cycle
In case you are not aware of this, your menstrual cycle will start on day one of your period and last up to day one of your next period.
Your most fertile time will be at ovulation – happens when your ovaries release an egg – which normally takes place twelve to fourteen days before the start of the next period.
This period is called the fertile window, and it’s the time when you’re more likely to conceive.
For a typical cycle that takes place every twenty-eight to thirty days, this fertility window is normally between day eleven and twenty-one.
It is important to point out that the sperm can survive inside the body sometimes for as much as seven days after a woman has sex.
You will be approaching your fertile window if your period last for five to seven days and you engage in sex immediately after.
This means you could get pregnant very soon after your period ends if you ovulate early, particularly if your menstrual cycle is naturally short.
If you have a short cycle and long periods, it is still possible for your ovaries to release an egg very quickly after your period ends. This egg can get fertilized as normal, and pregnancy occurs if and when that happens.
Of course, you should also remember that your chances of getting pregnant immediately after your period will increase each day after the bleeding stops.
If you have been trying to conceive desperately, then this will be a good time to have sex to increase your chances.
More Information about Your Chances of Conceiving
In addition to the above, you can get pregnant or conceive if your period has never come before, throughout your first period, or immediately after having sex for the first time.
It is also quite possible for you to become pregnant throughout the alleged safe period of the month even when your partner withdraws his penis before ejaculating.
Semen is normally released during sex, including the precum one, so any form of sex without protection could result in pregnancy.
There are also rare instances when women end up pregnant even though they did not have penetrative sex with their partner.
The sperm can be very resilient, lasting up to several days following ejaculation. This means that pregnancy is a definite possibility if either one of you has sperm on your hands or any other part of your body, and it comes in contact with your vagina.
If you are looking to conceive or get pregnant, one of the best ways to increase your chances is to invest in an ovulation testing kit.
There are many different types available today, ranging from the simple strips which test the urine to the digital computers which monitor things monthly.
It is often more difficult for women to detect ovulation without these tests.
Another, less accurate method of detecting ovulation is to measure basal body temperature (BBT). It is a widely used way to detect ovulation due to ease of the test.
In this method, women need to measure body temperature each day in the morning before starting any kind of activity. Ovulation is marked by 0.5-1.0° F rise in the BBT.
It is worth knowing that BBT test is less accurate than ovulation testing kits, and may fail to detect ovulation in some cases.
Bottom Line
There is really no safe period of the month to engage in sexual activities without using contraception and avoid getting pregnant. You could even conceive if you have sex during your period.
However, you will be more fertile at certain times during your menstrual cycle, and this is the period when you are more likely to conceive. At times, ovulation can occur within a few days after your period ends.
In addition, sperm could fertilize an egg three days or seventy-two hours after ejaculation. Aside from the chances of becoming pregnant, you also have the risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease, such as genital warts, chlamydia, or HIV/AIDs, so you should use contraception at all times when having sex.
If not, abstinence is the only sure way to avoid unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. You can talk to your medical doctor about the different contraception methods available to you.

i menstruated twice in a month in march and was supposed to see my period on the first of April but due to my irregularity of period it ended on the April so i had unprotected sex the day after my period and he ejaculated at me so i want to know can i can get pregnant
Hi Nancy, generally the day after your period isn’t your fertile time frame unless you have a long period (we’re talking ten days). And twice in a month is normal if you got your one period really early in the month and then have a 28-30 day cycle it’s quite regular to have it a second time in a month.
Hey I had one shot of depo last yr September and never seen my periods until 20th of March to 25 then I had unprotected sex first day after my period will I be pregnant and wanna know my fertility days
Hi Christa, generally the first day after your period you aren’t fertile. However the only way to really know your fertile days is to calculate it based on your next period, then you can determine when you were fertile easier. You have to know how long your cycle is in order to determine that. Here is a handy calendar to check out in order to determine your fertile days: https://womanjunction.com
Hi.
I had my period from 27-30 March and had unprotected sex on the 1st April where he pulled out. My cycle is a solid 28 days. Could I get pregnant?
Hi Casey, your fertile period, based on the calculator found here shows it between April 6th through the 10th, so most likely you wouldn’t get pregnant.
can you get pregnant five days after your period?
Hi Amber, it depends on how long your period was as to how close it is to your ovulation date and fertile period. You can always look at the calculator offered here To determine those critical time periods.
hi, i started my period march 25th and it ended march 29th, i had sex march 29th and he nutted in me is there any chances i could get pregnant?
Hi Amber, generally your fertile period would have started around the 4th of April. Most likely you are not pregnant however that’s only something that you will know once it’s time for your next cycle.
daniella, I’m riz. I have my menses march 17,2018 end at march 21,2017 but spotting at march 23,2018 and had sex at 25 of march but after having a sex with my bf i am bleeding? Could I be preggy? but he doesnt ejaculate inside me?
Hi Riz, you could be as you would have been having sex during your fertile period. Even if he doesn’t ejaculate in you at the end, there is still the consideration of pre-ejaculation which still contains sperm that can lead to pregnancy. If you aren’t trying to get pregnant, find a reliable method of birth control. You won’t however have even a sure idea until you get after the 24th of this month. Good luck.
Hello I met a girl and we had sex july1st then later I saw her August 23rd and as at 20 -03 she called me that she is 30weeks pregnant is there anyway am responsible for this
Hi Ayo, while it’s quite possible it’s not something that you would know unless you had a DNA test.
Okay but when I count backwards from the 1st , 2nd and 3rd scan the dates fell on August 14 , August 14 and August 19. Is there still a posibility pls .
Hi Ayo, like I said, without knowing when her LMP was and such, there is no way of knowing.
No judgements but I was on the nexplanon and had to get off for medical reasons anyway my last day of my period was July 4th I had a one night stand on the 6th it was unprotected and he used the pull out method but I never seen him ejaculate for sure then I had unprotected sex again on the 11th,12th,14th,16th, 17th and 19th. I’m now pregnant and I’m trying to figure out which one could be the father. Any help? All the other dates are with the same person and he did ejaculate in me every time.
Hello Lola, use this link to determine your conception date so you may know who the father is:

Can i get pregnant after my period?even though it is withdrawal?
Hi Alesha, how soon after your period? Withdrawal is not one of the best methods unless you are extremely in tune to your body and when you are ovulating. Pre-ejaculation still contains semen that can get you pregnant.
I had sex just after my safe period could I be pregnant
Hello I would like to know can I be pregnant if my period ended on the 15 and and had unprotected sex on the 18 ?
Hi Desiree, it depends on how long your cycle is and when you are in your fertile period and ovulating. You can check your fertile periods at the following link that might help, plus you’ll want to calculate from the beginning of your period, not the last day. https://womanjunction.com
My cycle is 28 days but I heard semen can still stay up to three days if you haven’t started ovulating.
Yes Desiree it can, but that’s still before even your fertile period which would have been the 20th and then you don’t ovulate until roughly the middle of that. So that’s why we say most likely not. Your fertile period allows that room for how long semen survives in the body as well. At this point though your only option is to wait it out until you are due for your next period.
Hi I got my period March 13 had finish my period march 17 had sex march 18 unprotected can I get pregnant
Hi Raveen, generally your fertile period is the 23rd to the 27th so you most likely wouldn’t have gotten pregnant. Check out your most fertile periods at the following link if you are trying to get pregnant so that you know the best times to have intercourse. https://womanjunction.com
Hello! I am very glad I found this article! I conceived my second child during my period, so I guess my cycle must be shorter. Now I’m having a few pregnancy symptoms even though I am not yet to my next period. This would be my fourth child, I would think by now I’d be pretty in tune with my body haha! I’m having breast tenderness, fatigue and high emotions! My husband and I had intercourse on the last day of my last period and he said that even though he withdrew, he might have come a little. How soon should I test? I am predicted to start my period in 4 days. Sorry this is a little long 🙂 Thank you!
Hi Hope, I would recommend waiting until after you at least miss your period before your take a test.
Thanks i have done the test, its positive but the lines were faint they were not bold at all and am not feeling any weak or anything just that my stomach is paining me.what could be wrong please?
Hi Anuoluwa, it could be nothing is wrong. A faint positive on a HPT is still a positive. I would wait a few days and take another one and see if the lines got darker. The higher your HCG levels, the darker the lines on the test.
My period came February 12 and i had sex during my ovulation period, today is 13th of March and no period yet, could i be pregnant?
Hi Anuoluwa, if you had sex during your ovulation period, yes you could be pregnant. I would take a test if you are at least 5 days late with your period. Good luck!
My period came from the feb.10 to feb.14. I had sex on the 14th protected but no birth control with the withdrawal method. It is now the 9th and I’ve been kinda emotional. Could I be pregnant?
Hello Kiara, if you think you might be pregnant then take a pregnancy test.
